We have an Envoy with the L6 (not V6), and those do have decent torque. That rig looks a bit too ambitious, though.

Like 400 said, the 4.2 in those are outstanding engines and the brakes are quite decent - and the trailer most likely has electronic brakes.
I would feel more confident here than back in the 50's towing some of the huge trailers they had. |

Rest of the story
A 38 foot motorhome was spotted being hauled in an unusual way down a Kansas highway. A picture that showed the motorhome being pulled by an SUV with a trailer attached was posted to Central RV’s Facebook page last week. The post was captioned “What in the HELL…!!! A V-6 suv pulling a 20-foot trailer pulling a 38 foot motorhome… And using the trailer as a car dolly for a motorhome…..! The driver appears to have been pulled over by authorities who were inspecting the vehicles. Comments on the post showed concern about the setup of the trailer and motorhome. “I don’t know how the rear bearings on the trailer even held up… There is easily 8000 pounds on that back axle” “You know what everybody’s forgetting… The hitch weight is only recommended at 700 pounds on that Trailblazer… not only is a vertical force… But the horizontal Force when you’re taking off… And more so obviously when you’re trying to do a panic stop… Panic stop shouldn’t even be in this story scenario… Because the whole picture is a panic” “You know what I think everybody’s forgetting… how in the hell did that Trailblazer stop over 28000 pounds of moving Mass going 60 miles an hour…. I bet those brakes were scorching”

They say "Necessity is the Mother of Invention". Not safe at all but maybe only used to just get that motorhome off the Interstate to a garage for repairs. And being a good Samaritan save the folks in it some money.
Two things I do know... I wouldn't pull it, or ride in it being pulled.

Looks like they were towing it with the tilt deck in the up position as well?
Extra strain, and minimal ground clearance. Checked all the wrong boxes. |

With electric brakes on the trailer there should be no problem stopping the rig whatsoever. And I doubt the guy was going 60 MPH with that rig anyway. It looks to me that they used the trailer as a tow dolly, people use tow dollys everyday, most tow dollys have no brakes, and rely on the tow vehicle to do all of the braking. I own 3 tow dollys, 2 have brakes and one doesn't. I towed a 84 GP on the dolly with a chevy cavalier on the one without brakes. The GP definitely out weighed the cavalier, towed it about 35 miles, no problems.
That trailer should be rated at a minimum of 7000 lbs., with the front of the motorhome, lifted it should have the majority of the weight on the rear axles. I really see little to be making a huge deal out of someone thinking outside of the box to tow an RV off a thruway........ Think about your typical tractor trailer that has a tractor that weighs 12-15000 lbs pulling a 53 foot trailer weighing up to 68000 lbs. The early semi tractors would be lucky to have 200 HP, so why is it so implausible for the SUV to be towing a 25000 lb motorhome? I believe it was an emergency situation, they weren't going coast to coast with the rig, the transmission in the SUV would have never made a long haul. There is a possibility that they were towing the SUV on a trailer behind the motorhome, and the motorhome broke down, They used what they had to get to a service center, anyone think of that scenario? One thing that is wrong, is the hitch on the SUV would never be rated high enough to tow that much weight, that is true, but to just get to the next exit and use common sense getting there, I would have no worries. How many times have you seen a "Hotshot" 1 ton dually towing a 50 foot long 3 car trailer loaded to the hilt with trucks on it? I see them on the thruway all the time, 3 pickup trucks would far exceed the weight of the RV pictured. Some of the shakey stuff I see going down the roads in OH being towed are a lot worse than that SUV towing an RV, believe me. This is shakey, and this guy wasn't just intending to tow this RV off the thruway, he intended to actually haul it somewhere: Notice the double chains on the sheetmetal tailgate which the gooseneck hitch is mounted to and the 4x4 wood block supporting the tailgate to the bumper hitch on the blazer............ |
