My evil nemesis is voltage regulators. I have a stack of BRAND NEW regulators that were bad right out of the box. At least 6 of 'em. It really stinks having to go through a bunch of new parts to find one that actually works. I've given up now on the new regulators and buy any old NOS ones I run across.

I had an AC Delco pump in since I had the car until the Pontiac Nationals in 2011 so that was about 12 years. It failed at the track within a few minutes of check in. I replaced it with a pump I got from PY and I think it was an Airtex. Got it changed up in the field at the track. Headed for staging for our Friday night show car drag racing and it failed in the staging lanes after running for maybe five minutes. Looked all over hell and back and couldn't find another pump except for the 50 yr old NOS AC pump in the swap meet. It got me home just fine and ran all year including a couple of trips to National Trails for some drag racing.

I only replaced it as a precaution with another Airtex pump that I got from PY a few days before the Pontiac Nationals. It got me to the hotel and failed while I checked in. Took a taxi to the track and got another pump from PY. I had all kinds of problems so I replaced it with a pump I got from Ames before the weekend was over. It got me home, but soon started starving for fuel and failed completely a few days after I got back. I had to get flat bedded home. I had a couple more pumps and forget what brands and then at least two Carter pumps, both of which failed quickly. All of the Airtex and Carter pumps failed. The Carter pumps were part number M4566. The old AC pumps were fine and the new Holley pump is fine so far.

Made for a most unpleasant summer.

I might be wrong, but I think the old A/C pumps had a paper or not rubber diaphragm? If that is true, the alcohol fuel would not eat them up.

I don't know what it had in it, but it was just fine and I should have left it alone. Cost me $3k or 4k chasing a problem I didn't really need to have.

Smile 62 389 Fuel Pump

Hi guys! This time I read the forums at length and discovered fuel pump issues are everywhere. Thought the problem was with my very dirty 2bbl Rochester 11/16" throttle bore carb. Besides a carb rebuild, I'm putting on another fuel pump. Bosch used to build one but, based on availability, now it's either a Edelbrock or Carter. Hope it's ok to show product urls:

The issue seems to be something called high or low cam. The cam is on the pump lever arm. So, since my 389 w/2bbl carb is*a base engine: Will either of the above work?

I hope that Carter pump is a lot more 'super' than the 7 or 8 of those that I had with one of them failing within a 1000' feet of the house.

The Holley mechanical pump I finally got is still going strong. Wasn't cheap though.
