Jeff, I also would like to know the ballpark figure on your work with the red 62. I have owned my 62 Catalina for 5 years now. I'm not wanting a full frame-off, as it is an original southern Cal. car with 75,000 miles on it. Wish I could afford to go the whole way. So what is your cost including all the surprises with this red Cat? Maybe Ron with Clearcreek Resorations can chime in with a cost range?

On all Paint/Resto projects that I take on, I charge time and materials.

If anybody wants to know any more than that, you can PM or email me.

That's the only way to do it, time and materials is the fairest for everyone.

Each car's different.

Time & materials only sounds very reasonable to me. I've never had a car painted, but I think for once I have a car worthy of a nice paint job. Just don't have any idea of what the cost range might be to have any work done. I sure am jealous of the owner!

Around here a ballpark for the job Jeff's doing is probably 5k, maybe a bit more depending on the materials used.

A few years back that was a REALLY GOOD deal. I expect it is right on now. A friend who is a crash adjuster says that shops will actually do older cars now b/c nobody is fixing stuff that they claim on insurance. Just driving it with a minimum of repairs & keeping the $. It was very hard to find somebody locally even for time & materials when I tried a couple of years ago. Good time to get this done! Best to find a guy like Jeff who takes an interest in your particular car for sure.

It's coming along. Been doing the fun part, block sanding. This is the part where you discover that all those shapes that make a car beautiful can also make it a real PITA to sand.

I've had some other mechanical customer work to get done so the progress has slowed some. But I am planning on finishing the first round of blocking and get the final application of sanding primer on it this week.

Yeah, What Matt said! It's not even my car, but it's almost like Christmas waiting to see the final result! Oh yeah...LOTS of curves on these cars, but I'd bet when you finish, they'll be looking mighty fine. Thanks for the heads-up. Looking forward to seeing that fine ride!

Well the second round of priming is done. It's been a long couple of days so I will post some photos tomorrow.

I'm tired and am calling it a day...

Ok, time for pictures...

First of all I thought I would show a few step by step photos of the block sanding process.

Here's the door after it's been guide coated.

And another photo of the door after a little time block sanding it. The dark areas are the low spots.

Here it is after it has had finishing putty put on on the low spots that were still there after blocking it out.

And the door after the finishing putty has been sanded. It's now ready for another round of priming.

This is how the whole car gets sanded. It's a time consuming job but assures that you will have some nice straight sheetmetal to lay the paint onto.

Next are some photos of the body and sheet metal after the first round of block sanding and ready for the second round of primer.

And some photos of after the second round of priming.

And now it's time for MORE block sanding. And then sealer and paint. But after all that blocking the car should be really straight so that makes the time worth it.

Looks good Jeff, You're doing it the right way.
Does the Snap On truck stop at your house or do you chase him down elsewhere?

Good tools promote good results.

He comes by the shop every two weeks. But lately it's been a bit more since this is HIS car.

Are you acting as just the painter, with the owner putting it all back together, weatherstrip and such, or will you be doing the reasembly?
