Nice Hemmings Pontiac feature
Rarely featured '73 GTO ... These cars have really grown on me over the years. I really did not like them back in the '70s and 80s.

I did not care much for you them, years ago. Their design was ahead of its time, my opinion.
I wish I could have bought a Can- Am, when I bought my TA. Would not likely have happened though. TA’s were much more affordable... Greg, how goes the 66?

Haven't done anything to the car itself and nothing for it since l overhauled the engine and put together a tripower for it. That was probably a year and a half ago... If I retire in the next couple of years, I know I'll start on it, if not soon, I probably should part with it.

Hell of a car. It takes a special person to go through that kind of a resto on a '73. 73's are probably the least respected GTO out there. You either love them or hate them and most people will give them the 'ol, "meh". I always thought they were a good looker for the era. People really should give 73's a second look. It just might change their mind. Thanks for posting.

Always liked the '73 Sport Coupe design. Very cool.

My wife had a LeMans GT in the same color combo before I met her. Had that black and red spear stripe on the side. I showed her pics from that article and she said, "Oh no, mine had those vents on the back 'windows' "... then I showed her the closeup of that quarter glass and she said, "Yeah! Like that!"...lol
If she'd had it when we met, maybe we would've held on to it...but doubtful. We met in '84 and it would've just been another smogger to me then. I like 'em now though.

I have always liked that body style and in particular a Can Am. They came out about the time I really started to notice cars from a kids point of view.
And, I thought the '74 was the least respected GTO! |

I do like these cars and remember looking at them new on the lot as my parents were car shopping at that time... The Grand Am & GTO I do not recall seeing a lot on the road even back then until the 77' Grand Am was out....you saw a lot of those stripped white cars running around. There is actually one for sale over in next town I posted a few years ago: Also, Here's a PY'r & friend with his, we were doing a test & tune day @ New England Dragway 2011 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFuSrl9Ud0M

Thanks for the link. Nice '73. I always liked the looks of the '73 GTO, and the '73 Grand Am too. If they had made the SD 455 available in those they would be super sweet.

I think I did see a SD-455 badged 73' Grand Am somewhere along the way.
I'm thinking Sliver with Red interior for some reason.

I'm another one who didn't really appreciate them back then, but like them now. The '73 was an excellent over-the-road car. Very comfortable and smooth. Much more refined than the first-gen GTO's I've always owned and driven.

Thanks for the post...great story and great resto. As mentioned you have to really want to do one of those, nothing reproduced.
I have a soft spot for those. My brother worked on his buddies 73 Leman sport, guessing around 77 . Built in Oshawa it had a 350 Chevy in it. Car got the hot rodded stuff done to it. Heads cam headers trans mods. Had N 50s on the rear and Cragars. . Coulor combo was Dark brown /saddle buckets. It was a very clean piece. Lots of road art done back then... |

While I never had a 73 GTO I did have a73 Lemans Sport Coupe and a 77 Grand Lemans. I liked the body style and the ride was terrific. I missed the article about the GTO but I did see the one about the 4 seat Fiero that never was.

Great story Greg, thanks for the link.
I was lucky enough to get some driving experience of the '73 Goat back when they were new. A good friend in high school traded his '71 Road Runner in for a beautiful new '73, white with white/black interior. It did handle very well and had a firm ride for it's size and weight. My '67 would easily pull away from it on surface streets, but I know that top end would have been a different story. I doubt the '74 gets the same amount of respect as the larger '73. BTW, the '73 GTO was later traded for a '69 Z28. |

And I agree on the 74.. probably gets the least respect...although l like those now also. Hey, I'm a 68 fan and it's not far ahead of either one in popularity! Sent from my moto g(6) play using Tapatalk
