I should sleep better tonite.

I am a big fan of RobbMc fuel pumps. Just click on the icon on the right hand side of this forum. They are pretty pricey and may be overkill for your combo.

Thanks, jim
You'd think it just couldn't be a ANOTHER pump, but I isolated it pretty well I think with the suction line sitting in a gallon of gas and the output going into another jar. Can’t be much else.

That is one of the ways we tested our pump to determine it needed a rebuild. I think in our case it is a check valve that wore out.

Congrats for your tenacity.

Yes - I have a Holley mechanical pump on my "brand X" racer -

but - I also have a Holley electric pump mounted at the tank.

Been that way for many, many years with no issues.

61 389-348, when you did your flow rate test in an earlier post, by any chance did you compare flow rateS between gas cap ON vs gas cap OFF?

You might want to if you haven't started turning a wrench yet.

I did it yesterday with gas cap off, but the fuel pump wasn't connected to anything except suction in a can of gas and output in another can. Taking the gas cap off is one of things I've tried a number of times when trying to get the car back home. It didn't do anything that I could tell.

I've had it on and off and replaced so many times that I no longer remember which way is which.

I haven't done anything further yet until the Holley pump gets here. I needed a break for a couple of days.

Been following this thread for AWHILE!!! Yeas, I have had the Holley 110 on my car for 5 years with ZERO issues.

I have a 400 bored .030 over with a 670 Holley carb and I never run out of fuel. The Tempest had a 2BBL 326 with 5/16th fuel line. Weird that you have had so many pumps go bad. I have an Airtex on my 62 Catalina with a 67 326 and it has been fine.. Although, I have not had it over 4K many times.

And this was on the 50 year old NOS AC pump that I bought in the swap meet at the Tri Power Nationals in 2011. I had it wound way tighter than 4k

Should have just left it installed. The Airtex I repleced it with the week before the 2012 event only made it as far as the Motel 6 in Milan

Fuel pump is now replaced with the Holley and the world is fine. Full throttle is fine. Tip-in stumble is gone. Let's see how long it lasts. Can it get through tomorrow? Do I REALLY believe I have it this time ….. no. It will have to prove itself to me and that will take time, but for now, I’m rolling again.

Anyway, I want to say a huge thanks to everyone who has racked their heads to come up with ideas for me.

It was fine all weekend. I still don't believe and it will take a while before I'm confident in it, but so far ….

An update:

Still hard to believe that I went through that many fuels pumps, but the car is still running great. I took it out to National Trails on the last day of the season. And that thing is consistent with 60' varying by a few 1000th and ET varying by about 5 100ths from best to worse.

Default Same problem

I have had the same problem. Which Holley fuel pump did you use?
I have avoided the problem by not getting to the pedal too much but what fun is that...
Thanks

The Holley mechanical 110 GPH pump, part # 12-389-11.

And it wasn't a matter of just using part throttle. I had the last two Carter pumps fail completely, one within 50 miles or so and one fail within 5 miles. The only pump that lasted for a while was the 50 yr old NOS AC pump that I bought at the swap meet at Norwalk in 2011 to get me home after three failed new pumps. That pump was fine all year and was only replaced a few days before the 2012 Pontiac Nationals because I was REAL nervous about a 50 yr old pump diaphragm on today's ethanol based fuels. Should have left it in there and maybe avoided the hell I went through for several months.

And it's not that I have some highly modified engine which needs a electric pump. It's a stock base 389-303 A/C automatic, which runs all of a 15.00 at 90 mph. The mods are really only a Petronix II and a replacement 1406 for the AFB. The AFB was only rebuilt three times and then replaced to see if it was the problem. So my fuel needs are pretty modest.

Please post the pump brands, their part numbers, how many of each you tried that didn't work and which one (besides GM NOS) did work.

(Slightly O/T but one of my first PY posts dealt with a similar problem - the Airtex pump from NAPA was the culprit and Airtex customer service (at that time anyway) was worthless.)

I have heard multiple mechanics tell of similar experiences like this only with thermostats.
