I'm about to crawl out of my skin. We're purting the front end on tomorrow. I dropped the dash pad in this afternoon when i paid the chief a visit. It looks so nice. All the late nights and weekends are paying off.

Its been a week of highs and lows. Front end is on but we had issues with the door and fender too far out at the a pillar. And then.... a disaster with the 20-78 zolatone i was able to round up. Its no longer available and we're certain what i was able to locate was bad. Would not cover. Ran out after three qts and still not done. That was thursday. On friday we determined it didnt bite to the primer and would peal. So it started coming out friday afternoon. That as a costly mistake. Gonna have to come up with a plan b for the trunk finish.

Sorry you're having issues Bob ...it looks so nice. What is the 20-78 zolatone? Not familiar with that.

Thx, Bruce

Bob, I am sorry, as well, with the issues you had. I had problems initially with the trunk - don't give up!! I first used that trunk splatter from the distributer in Chicago (search the posts here and you can get details)- it was terrible.

Then I talked to others and they recommended Zolatone. So, after taking everything done to bear metal again, we used the Zolatone 20 series product, as well. Have you tried to source it at TCP Global. That's where I bought mine. They still list the 20-78.

I can ask the shop guy who did my trunk floor what prep products he used. I know he took it down to bear metal then laid down a self etching primer before the black coat (required for my Zolatone color). If you want the details, I can send you his phone number and you can talk directly to him. Let me know. He put it down two years ago and it still looks great. He used just under 2 quarts to do the whole trunk area.

Let me know.

Thanks for the info ziggy. I started with tcbglobal. They were the folks that told me initially it had been discontinued. Then aftervvsome searching i located a supplier that had it available in qts. Bought three to be safe. Had to call them aftervit arrived. Two qts were like water. The third looked like blackjack roofing tar only in red. They rushed me another qt. They have two qts left at a warehouse in NC. But i need to regroup. And im certain my painter wants nothing to do with it now. Fwiw.. my supplier says the 20-75 has been discontinued as well.

I think I missed a post or two, but is this for the red-oxide primer or something else?

Well I made some phone calls this afternoon starting with the manufacturer. It is still available. They provided me a distributer in Chicago and they are willing to order it from the mgr if an order is placed by a retailer. I now have the name of a local retailer. I'm in "RESET" mode right now. My painter doesn't want anything to do with it now and I don't want to do anymore leg-work on his behalf. So, when the hood and trunk lid go on, its coming home. I'll deal with trunk later which contradicts my plan. Why TCBGlobal and MidWest said it was no longer available - beats the heck out of me. Perhaps they only want to push products in high demand.

Notice anything unusual about this carpet set?

Length x (width - 4") = drink more beer

I'll be glad when this project is over

The chief is home and have made some progress on the interior as well. Next on agenda. Install front and rear wiring harnesses, tail panel trim, grill and front bumper. Im on the fence. Dad didnt order hd cooling. Plan on stealing 4core harrison from driver and installing full shroud. Will keep original 3core setup.

Default Zolotne Primer???

Hey Bob, did you use Zolotone Primer? I have used Zolotone products before and they work great, prepped and sprayed my mother-in-laws original steel kitchen cabinets. Is the splatter paint still coming off? All of the splatter paint or just is some spots? If I can help you figure this out or help in any way with the use of the Zolotone products, just call or e-mail me Lee hellerods@yahoo.com 805-473-0865 I don't sell paint-- just an old painting contractor

The car is looking great! For my own education, when did they go to Zolotone for the trunk paint? My '61 is painted body color, and I was thinking that continued until 1964.

Pontiac spatter paint started in 1963 and used in 1964 with the aqua/black and the red/black. 1965 was aqua/ black only for the B body cars.Pontiac never used Zolatone, and had there own formula. . It was a smooth paint, unlike the textured stuff zolatone. People used the stuff and passed it off as the great trunk paint over the years.Lotta missed info over the years that people believe as correct

Default zolatone issue

Im not going to discourage the use of zolatone but would suggest anyone considering its use consult someone experienced in its application. My application was destined for failure beginning with product. Good luck finding the red. Its either been on a shelf too long or the distributor wont order a small qty of 2-3 qts. My painter did not apply the correct primer. And the distributor gave him bad advice telling him it could be dilluted up to 10pct water. Wrong!! My painter assumed alot of the responsibility for not researching. It took him a couple days to get it all out plus a scuff and repaint.

I do agree it does not look like the factory finish. In my opinion the original looks like thick nonuniform red oxide dull primr with a small amt of black particle.

My trunk is now in semi black chassis saver and thats how it will remain for now. Once the car is on the road i might revisit the trunk finish but for now, i want to drive it.

Thanks gor all the compliments and advice. Much appreciated. The car turned out well and i cant wait to take dad for a good run. It should make 450hp easy and tq should be around 550. And it looks stock to boot.

I might have missed it, but would you share your engine 'recipe' (what parts, etc.)? If you have it somewhere else, please share a link to it!

Chk ur pms. If i recall i sent them to u bman and chiefpont66. But for the forum, its a hr setup built based upon a recipe from dave bisshop at sd and jim moran at mbj machine. Stump puller, sd ported 716 heads, and rotating assembly and addl head work by mbj.
