Default Another 64 Catalina build

I figured I'd begin to document my build here. I'm not a professional so this will be a learning experience for me.

Here's the story:
Wanted to update the thread. I took all the advice received and when that way. I decided to change the transmission to manual 4 speed Muncie and the motor will get a fresh rebuild with a 068 cam,4 bbl intake with a carter competition carburetor. Started building my parts inventory. Also took the advice of just driving it the way it is now and enjoying it. Put Hargerty insurance on it and antique plates. Got the brakes working correctly and took it for a test drive. Runs great! Plenty of power and shifts beautifully. But like all good things they come to a end. 30 minutes into my ride she shut off on me. Stopped on the side of road opened the hood to find gas all over the top of the carburetor and intake. Checked that everything was tight. Sat there a hour and it all evaporated. Trying starting it after about 10 minutes she started and no gas coming out of anywhere. So I headed for home to be safe. Got home and parked her in he spot and she stalled. Just let her sit for a few days. Then went out checked things over and started her again. She fired right up and ran great sitting there idling. Did this for a week. No gas blowing out. Running great. After about two weeks of making sure that no gas was blowing out I tried another test drive around the block. Ran great on the straight aways slowed down to make the turn to come home. She stalled out again opened the hood. And there was gas all over again. She never would start again. So towed her home. Decided just to start tearing her apart and do it right and take my time rebuilding her.

Now:
Finished my finished my 20X30 First time building a Garage. After a year of building it by myself with the help of my 72 year old father and girlfriend as my helpers.

Now with the inside of it done yesterday. I got the cat to run long enough to get her inside.

So the fun begins
Removing the interior and it's going to the upholstery shop
Ordered the carpet kit from Opgi but it on back ordered.

Parts I've purchased so far

64 Gto Muncie and shifter
64 flywheel and bell housing
64 rebuilt starter
64 rear transmission mount
61-64 four bbl intake
Carter competition carburetor
Speedometer cable
New clutch fork
Control arm bushings
Ball joints
Sway bars kit
Shifter porch Opgi
Fabcraft Trophy track posi
Fabcraft 9.3 3.64 Ring and Pinion gear set
Fabcraft master rear end rebuild kit
Axle bearings
Fabcraft rear end manual
Fabcraft 1963-1964 complete clutch pedal linkage assembly
1961-1964 clutch pedal support

I think that it for now. Not buying anything for the engine until it torn down and inspected.

Started the tear down. I do all the work with hand tools. No air compressor yet.

I noticed the heads where very nasty when the valve covers were removed. But clean in the valley pan area. Will be able to tell more when it's on the engine stand later this week.

I work on it as my body allows me too. Work alone too.

Ok the engine is out and the Rotomatic 325. It a good thing the carburetor was flooding. Both motor mounts were toast and the transmission mount too. One a small spring inside the bell housing that the flex plate had thrown. See pics for details. Would like to meet the exhaust guy that welded the hangers to the cross member and put them in in a way to never remove the exhaust. Had to be cut.

Engine is on the stand and one head removed. Other side fighting with the head of last exhaust bolt rounded off. Each side the exhaust bolts front and rear were missing or loose. That's the side the dip stick runs between the exhaust and head.

Here's more pictures for your viewing pleasure

Checkout the flex plate

Tom the carburetor choice? Please explain what's wrong with this choice. Isn't a carter a arter or is it the competition part?

Question on pistons? Is there a stamp in the top of the piston to tell the size i.e. STD,.030 etc.

If they're standard size, probably no stamp. If they're oversize they should be stamped.

ok so no stamps anywhere. pistons are tight in the bore(no slop) no movement. pulled the oild pan and found a chunk of metal between the pickup and tray. cleaned it up and it a piece of piston skirt. Started looking around for the broken piston and found the outside of #7 piston broken. I've never seen a broken piston skirt before and was wondering what causes that?

Move tear down soon. will update as I do.

Somewhere around 64 Pontiac changed from stud-oiled to pushrod-oiled rocker arms. I can't tell for sure, but it looks to me like those rockers do not have to spurt holes to allow oil from the pushrods to reach the rocker ball area. If so, I'd consider changing out the rockers for ones with spurt holes.

Thanks for the reply Bill, yes i'm changing them out to the 66 and up rockers and pushrods. Either B-man or Tom had suggested that earlier before the tear down had started.

here's a question on Lifters? Which brand is the best for my application?

Does Melling make a kit with the timing set together when upgrading to the 068 cam?

Ok rest of tear down is done except for crankshafts still in block. (Back got sore) all the pistons look good except for #8 it's got a broken skirt and a piece between the top two rings broken out there. I think think is where all my blow by was coming from? I have pictures. The cam looks good but changing it to the 068. Going to send the block out and have it checkout before I do anything.

What I did figure out is this is a junkyard motor from all the yellow paint on half the motor. Thinking someone changed the cam and timing set to sell it.

The cylinders look nice and barely a ridge at the top.

Will update with pictures after the Alabama storms are over tonight

This block has the ear with the holes for the starter to mount to the block but no threads. I have posted pictures so some help would be appreciated identifying it!

Tom, I'll get that picture tomorrow.

Anyone ever heard of a Cwc 519640 cam?

This is what was in my motor and on the end looks like a B stamped on the front end.
