Ram Air Quadrajet 7042270 XG 3411 400 455 Carburetor
Selling a pretty rare carb. This carb came along with a freshly built 400 I bought a few years ago. The guy gave me a bunch of extra parts he was going to use in his build. I don't much about it, but the pictures tell the story. He didn't know what this carb was. I never paid any attention to it as I'm building a Tri-power car. I was sorting through the extras and thought I'd run the numbers. Surprise.
Asking $2000. I'm located in Belleville, IL 62221 near St Louis. I'll ship it. Payment in money order or cash. If you are local come check it out. I have a bunch more pictures. pm me with your email if you want them. Thanks for looking Dean |

I am posting this for both you, and for any member who might be interested in buying this, as avoiding a deal that goes sideways after money is exchanged always seems ideal to me.
Maybe someone more knowledgeable than me regarding 1972 application Quadrajets can speak up: My gut reaction after seeing those first couple pictures of the application code, pick code, and date code stampings made me think that they didn't look right; then I noticed this is a Carter manufactured carb. As far as I know, Carter never manufactured parts for the 'Ram Air' spec carbs - I have been made to understand that all those (67-74) were done in house. Carter was to the best of my knowledge contracted to supplement production of the 'pedestrian' applications - which was normally 'L78' 400-TH400 & 'L75' 455-TH400. Don't get me wrong, it's a very nice looking carb, but it looks to have been recoloured, and reassembled at some point; The vacuum break in the front is a new replacement part, and the choke assembly is from a Buick application carb. Posting pictures of the casting numbers for all three components might help your cause.

I have seen many 7042270 and 7042273 carbs that were done by Carter that were orginal but those stamping would not be correct for the carter carb in that era. From what i remember Rochester had a fire or someother natural disaster and Carter was outsource to supply carbs in 72.
Here is a pic of a 7042273 carb that i owned not long ago.

Thanks for the help guys. I've added a couple more pictures. I'll try to take more of the casting numbers and add them later. Like I said I don't know the history or where he ordered this carb from. You guys are the experts. Thanks Dean

I have never heard this!! @ Dean; I hope to not be upsetting you with my posts; I can picture myself being in your shoes, so please understand I am meaning well. the latter bleeder screws, and plugged throttle body front vent(?) could be explained away; I may be wrong, but it also looks like the rear vacuum feed has the wrong thread tapped... which again could be explained away; But, all of these points are worth noting as red flags. What cannot be explained away is this: It looks quite clear to me that the divisional identifier has been ground off from this spot in an attempt to make this throttle body appear more correct. I must take pause to stress what Brad pointed out, Carter manufactured carbs were not stamped in the same manner as Rochester manufactured carbs, so his point is as I see it, is an air tight fact that aside from anything I have said, more or less determines the potential of authenticity. If the carb is set up properly, odds are that it would still be a great fill in for a missing RA carb.

Thanks for the help. So you think it's probably a restamp / fake? I don't want to screw anyone over. I am just trying to sell off the extra parts I've collected that I won't use.

I've learned more about this carb. It appears it was not born as 7042270. Here's some more pics.
New price $750. Willing to entertain offers. Sorry for all the confusion. I knew you guys would help me with this. As far as I know this has never had gas in it since the rebuild. Dean |

I see you got the pictures working!
That fourth picture shows a plug, and that is the correct for 1972 fuel bowl casting number, so that tells me this carb started it's life as any of the following: 7042262 - 455/auto (A & G body) 7042264 - 400/auto (F, A & G body) 7042272 - 400/auto (full sized) 7042274 - 455/auto (full sized) 7042276 - 455/auto (full sized; altitude) 7042278 - 400/auto (full sized; altitude)
