Early rocker arm question here!
Ok , what the heck is different about 1959 389 rocker arms other then the oil feed hole that would not allow the usage of 1964 and up rocker arms on a 1959 motor?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light on this!

The valve stem side of the later rocker arm is longer. If you can get good rocker arm geometry and the pushrod rides in the proper location they will interchange.

Quote:
This picture does not show a '59 rocker arm. '59 rocker arms do not have an oil spurt hole.

Egge Machine implies that '55-60 are different than 61-63 and offer both.
The 55-60 rockers have reduced size push rod oiling to supplement the stud oiling, this would appear to be a pretty novel offering.

1964 and earlier rocker arms had no pushrod oil hole. The exception is the 1964 GTO and 421 engines with 9770716 heads. They did have the oil hole for rocker lube through the pushrods. All 1964 and later Pontiac rocker arms did have the oil hole.
I was not aware of a problem using late rocker arms on a pre '65 engine that lubed the rocker arms through the rocker studs. I'm sure it has been done. What would be the issue? Are the '67 and up rockers different than pre-'67?

1967 1:st design w/o guide plates uses the 389 style rockers.
1967 2:nd design w/guide plates uses the 1968 and later (exc. RAIV) rockers . Itīs all about the valve stem angle. |
