Default First GTO's Made

I know a guy says his GTO build date was July of '63. I believe July was the first month.
From I have heard through the years - the first GTO production cars were convertible and 4 speeds - in the silvermist color. His is a convertible 4 spd silvermist -

I don't think PHS can help - does anyone know who would be a good source to find out what actual production number this GTO may Be?

The first GTOs were the zone announcement cars and were completed on September 14, 1963.

The July/August timeframe is the typical model changeover period but the '64 GTOs were a late introduction.

More or less.

It's not an exact science -there's a day or two of uncertainty surrounding most of these dates (based on in process repairs, post processing, etc). We keep some special builds at the assembly plant for up to two weeks after they actually cleared the end of the line, but we have a lot more electrical content (software and databased) and powertrain controls than they had back then.

We use the VIN and the stamped dates because it's really the best we can do.

Post the build date off the his cowl data tag and we can tell you (roughly) when it was built.

But - no - there were no records kept of the "order" GTOs were built in once you hit regular production.

PHS can help only if you have the VIN.
