Default Console shifter question

I have heard that 64-67 GTO consoles are basically the same. But I have also heard that with a 64 console you need to use the 64 or early 65 shifter and handle or there are hitting issues going into reverse. Is this a fact?

You have to use the '64 or '65-'66 (3232) Hurst shifter. You cannot use the later Hursts with clip in or bolt on handle. They are too big where the handle attaches and will hit the shifter bezel. See pics attached. On the left a '69 Hurst with clip in handle and on the right a 3232. A stripped down integral 3232 handle pic attached also for your reference.

Thank you.. So if I understand correctly the Hurst 64 to 66 will work with the 64 console?

'64-'66 consoles are basically the same. '64's have bluish gray paint between the ribs and '65-'66's are painted black. So yeah, the '64 or the '65-'66 shifter would work. The '64 shifter is a little different than the '65-'66.
