Thanks guys and yeah Jerry's car looks awesome! There's still a ton of work to be done. The fenders are just mocked up and the radiator support probably won't be used. I have to get the steering figured out and installed then the motor and trans with front and mid engine plates. The rear needs rebuilding. Roll cage, wiring windows etc.... lots to do!
Love the Zettles car! Was in touch with them a while ago.

Pont - I love that '63!
I haven't mentioned it but Dad also had a '63 coupe. He was going to do a SD clone but passed away before he could get started. The coupe went to a family friend, who is continuing the work. Congratulations on your "summer vacation"....(....I *think*....)

I see you changed from the chevy truck front end to a straight tube axle. Did you do that for period correctness (and looks) or for any other reason, such as parts availability or???. Just wondering because I was thinking of using a '67 van front end on a car. Thanks for info you may have. And I love the gasser look. My intent is to make my '73 TA appear as if the gassers kept progessing in time and became lowered and more aerodynamic but still having the set back motor and lengthened front end. While using a lowered/dropped tube front axle (or the truck axle if I can't afford the tube stuff. I want to lengthen the front end 2 feet. And build a corresponding fiberglass front end to use. Love the thread. Keep us posted. Thanks for the inspiration. Mark L

I never did this sort of thing before and when I cut the front frame off and extended it straight out it made it too wide for the older style axle. The easy way out was to buy a tube axle kit from Speedway Motors. I still have the other axle and hope to use it someday on another project. Good luck on your project, it sounds interesting.

After a long break on the car, I'm back on it. 1st pic is what I started with.
Steering is installed, Ladder bars, trans cross member and engine plate also. Hitting the body work now as well. The car was really rough so the body is taking longer than I thought it would. I ended up using front wheel lips on the rear quarters. Front lips are wider and higher off the body lines. Tried selling those fenders at a few events, glad they didn't sell! Here are a few pics. Also installed the seats and liked what Dil did with his dash so I machine turned a couple pcs of Stainless steel sheet metal on a Bridgeport miller. Haven't cut it for gauges yet.

Thanks Jim, much appreciated.
I realize there are plenty of guys in this particular forum that are cringing at what I did to a GTO but wanted to also show I pulled this car out of the woods in upstate NY. It was terribly rusty and rotted, totally stripped and left for dead to clone a Lemans. Last edited by 6567GTO; 04-11-2016 at 02:55 PM. |

Can you post pics of the rear suspension and forward ladder bar mounts? That is exactly how I envisioned my wagon !!! how long are the ladder bars and where you get them ? Your car is looking great! !!!!!

Sure thing. The ladder bars are 66.5" long and I bought them on eBay. they were fairly inexpensive too and I think they were listed as 4 x 4 ladder bars. they're welded to the rear axle tubes and my front mount has 3 positions for pinion angle adjustment.

Thanks Hooter, I think it's gonna take longer than that to get it buttoned up. My adhd doesn't help either. But I'm pretty motivated lately. might be at a stage for it to hang out on the edge of the show field though. Last edited by 6567GTO; 04-11-2016 at 09:55 PM. |
