Default Removing Camshaft Q's

What is the correct or easiest way to remove cam from housing without damaging the housing end cap? I found out today from Larry at Clifford there cams are reground from a stock cam and a core is sent in to regrind. Dying to get it out and check the base of the cam for markings as the valvespring dont appear to be stock and has me thinking maybe my parts motor actually did have a clifford cam kit using a reground stocker.

That'd be sweet to have an re-ground cam if it's serviceable. There isn't a pretty way about the removal.

Looks as thought this cam might be easier to come out then i thought. When i removed the cam tower the camshaft has play in it and plug is a little further out from the housing end. You can see in the one pic below the cam housing that the cam has slid down Would this mean bad?

Not likely. There is a retainer plate at the back of the cam that might not be set in proper or loose. And just because it's a bit loose in the journals it's in now doesn't mean it'll slide right out. You could have a fight at each journal.

The housing could be worn or warped. You might also want to check the height of that housing against a good known one to see if it's been shaved for a bigger cam.

Just went and hammered the the plug in and slack is gone. Will have to try the slide hammer approach another day and see if will pop plug out.

Well I removed the cam pulley and found some interesting news. The base has a Crane marking on it followed by H320 H1563M. Anyone ever hear having a stock cam re ground by Crane? When I talked to Larry at clifford he said if it was one their cams it would have a 268 marking on it.

I tried the 2x4 method and the cam wouldn't budge. Tried using a rubber mallet and hammering it down and nothing. Not sure its worth my time to try and remove it if the crane markings tell me what it is.

Both of my 68 1brl cams I have laying around have no markings on the base of the cam.

Sent an email off to Crane to see if the numbers meant anything and they sent me back a spec sheet. Unfortunalty its a pdf so im not sure how i would go by hosting it online and putting it up for you to see. The cam spec are .530" Lift and 246* Duration which seems to be a little hotter then a 66-67 Sprint cam being .438" and 244* if thats correct. The spec sheet also mentions that using this cam must have to mill the cover down to accept it.

If the housing is milled you probably don't want to remove the cam from it anyways. How much do you want for the cam and housing?? =D =P (I couldn't help myself)

I'm not to up on cams for these engines but does it look like a mild or wild cam with the rest of the specs on the sheet? I'm after a lopey idle sound similar to a clifford design.

It's going to be pretty good for the small engine. That is more lift than my big block Buick, and the duration is dependent if it is measured at .050" or if it's advertised numbers, but really in either case for the size engine, it's big cam. It should lope like crazy.

Perfect, just the good word I wanted to hear!

Can only imagine that the head must have had some work done to keep up the camshaft. Going to take the shortblock and head in to be checked and see what its going to run me to refresh it.

I just hope the bottomend (.040 forged slugs and rods) is still useable and just needs some bearings and rings to be on my way. Although my car originally was a 250 i think this 230 will perform just the way i want it with the extra 1000rpm powerband to 7500. Im going to take my flywheel into the machine shop and have it lightened as much as i can safely to reduce rotating mass. Plan to add 4.10 gears with the T5 swap and this should be a potent little machine that will rev like crazy.

Yeehaw! I'm installing 4.56 gears in my Firebird, though with an automatic. I'm going to wind the piss out of the engine with the valvesprings in it now and expect to see float around 5,000rpm (1bbl single springs) the with a new 4bbl E cam I plan on swapping in some more potent springs and again wind the piss out of it until I think I'm hitting port choke, which hopefully is before I have any connecting rod issues. Then I'll decide if this engine will get a turbo or wait until I finish building my "good" engine for the turbo. I also have a Sprintbird adjustable cam sprocket, I might install and retard the cam timing to pull the power band up higher. Or at least try it.
