Default My big a$$ GTO hood scoop...purists look away :)

i love the way 66 GTO hoods look except i think they are a little on the dainty side. so i decided to chop up a perfectly good GTO hood scoop and try to make it a little bigger...a little taller...a little more aggressive...and a lot more functional. so far so good. i ll keep posting pics as work at finishing it.

and starting to tack in the voids

Nice Job....I can't wait to see the final product. Are you needing more underhood clearance for a reason? I'm beginning to ready my '66 for a fresh CV-1 headed 468 and may need some additional underhood clearance as well.....Maybe you should build 2 of those hoods! (I'll send you my paint code and you can ship it to NW PA when it's finished! Keep us posted!

It's been a couple of years since I looked but VFN fiberglass sold an "exaggerated" 66 GTO scoop & they would mount it on a fiberglass hood for you. I went with a stock appearing fiberglass hood from them for a "stealthy" weight savings.

You did cut that from a hood that had the buckled over the hinge syndrome, didn't you?

It will be interesting to see what the finish product will look like.

thanks guys, like i said i ll keep you posted. and sorry for the confusion. i got the GTO hood scoop that had already been cut from a GTO hood off EBay and i am grafting it to a 66 lemans hood.

This is actually my second attempt. the first one failed miserably (tried to weld too much too fast and warped the hell out of everything.) i took what i learned from that try and what i learned from the episode of Muscle Car TV where Lou did all the body work to the 67 Lemans and decided to give it another try. patience grasshoppa

PS sorry for the big pictures screwing up the size of the browser window

no, i was actually able to cram the throttle body, carb spacer and a tall carb hat for my super charger all under a stock Lemans hood. im just doing it to be a little different and get some fresh air to the motor with thoughts down the road to to fab up a ram air pan so the super charger will get some good cool air rather than the air around the headers.

well, my big a$$ hood scoop is a little too big. im going to have to go with it though. maybe in the future i will do another one taking what i learned from my last 2 experiences.

im still finishing the insert. the angles are not as pretty as the original. i still plan on contouring the the inside of the insert to resemble the stock insert and i am going to
extend the bottom of the insert so its not directly looking at the motor. i ll post some more pics later, once its on the car.

on the plus side, its gonna give my motor all the fresh air it wants and then some

thanks guys. 400, your scoop would have worked great if i knew what the hell i was doing....live and learn

here is a pic i took with the scoop just sitting on the hood from the drivers seat. it doesnt really look that big from the drivers point of view...i guess it will just look big in the rear view mirror of people im about to pass

I like it a lot. Nice craftsmanship as someone else pointed out. Has a "XXX (movie)" flair to it, though more tasteful IMO.

I had heard that the original scoop was actually supposed to be taller (ala Ford Thunderbird) but that it kept tearing the metal during the stamping process.

They made it as tall as they thought they could...

FWIW -

Vic, I think that scoop looks great! Looks a lot better than a huge snorkel scoop would and it retains a stock looking appearance.
