Default 1966 Lemans Sprint project

Here's the start to my 66' Lemans Sprint project thread. I found the car in Hemmings magazine and had it shipped from Wy. PHS documented Sprint/auto Barrier blue Parchment interior Rally 1's still has the factory Safe-T-track rear end. Orig engine and trans are long gone. Im currently rebuilding a 69' 250 plan to use this engine set up until I find a correct '66 230 Sprint engine. I'll be running a Th-350 trans instead of the 2-speed St-300.

As some of you know I've been collecting some parts over the last few months and am still looking for some of the hard to find parts. Machine work's been done to the 250 it's bored .30 still looking for forged pistons may settle for cast pistons. So far I picked up a rebuilt 68' 1bbl head and new 1bbl cam. 4bbl intake/manifold 66' rebuilt 4bbl auto carb/Nos Sprint muffler and some other odds and ends.

Here are some pics so far removed the front end and suspension going to strip and paint the frame and bottom of the car and start doing all the body work.

that lower cover was a candidate for my belt change mod before you repaired it.

Nice! I like how you figured out the brackets for the carb. Since so many are looking for that you should make a product and sell them, seriously.

Been working on the frame and firewall I used wax and grease remover in a spray bottle and a red scotch brite to scrub all the dirt and oil off. The firewall, floor pan, frame have almost zero rust and pretty much cleaned right down to the factory black. I used my da with 80 grit to sand down the frame and firewall, there were alot of factory runs in the black paint.

I found a factory chalk mark in the middle of the firewall it was actually under the black paint it's hard to see but you can almost make it out in the pic. I took some pics of the firewall were it meets the floor pan you can see where I stopped cleaning and how nice the pans are.

Here's a few pics of the block and the 4bbl pcv tube. The tube was pitted real bad so I ground it down and refinished it.

Painted the frame and firewall yesterday used a paint called XO rust its enamel oil base with a satin finish,I reduced it slightly and sprayed it with my Sata spray gun. Holds up very well did my 71' T-37 over 6 yrs ago and never had a problem. Next step will be ordering the front end rebuild, installing the control arm bushings and then painting the control arms.

I wanted to mention I seam sealed the firewall prior to repainting used 3m's light bodied two part seam sealer.

Working on the oil fill tube degreased the inside and used a bench top wire wheel to remove the rust and paint. Tommorow im going to tack weld the screen back on and the retainer.

I dont know what your intent is for this motor but theres alot of room for improvement on that oil fill tube/baffle/screen type evacuation system.
I made a baffle out of a couple of washers placed on an angle so the oil vapor would condense and migrate back into the pan.A copper scrubbie in-between gives it plenty of surface area for mist collection.

Happen to have any pics of what you did? That's a good idea.

Interesting. On my throw together experiment engine I simply threw the screen back into the pipe with the top folded up some.

On the washers and copper scrubbie set up, did you have any oil filling issues with flow downwards through it?

Not sure what I was thinking last night, you cant weld aluminium screen to metal. So I used 3m panel bond to hold the screen and retainer. Just had to make sure it was bare metal to metal contact. It's rated up to around 600 degree's.

May consider something different down the road but for now I think the screen will work.

problem lies in design, throwing oil up thru the screen at high RPMs
