Pulled apart the engine, obviously has been rebuilt in the past, 30 over pistons in it.

Cam looks good but didn't pull the gear yet so don't know if it original. Some of the "lifters" are missing those little studs at their tips.

Intake valves gummed up a bit, probably leaking valve guides and or blow back from rings. Bores look really nice but rings seemed loose in the bores? Needs valves and valve seat work..

Anything I should watch out for during hottanking?

The GM Lash Adjusters are the only ones I'm aware had metering valves,
Most all the aftermarket had a slightly different design and didn't use one.
Also stay conscious of the metering valve in the head.
Don't want to jack it up and/or loose it.

is this rebuild a good time to get some of the Lincoln 4.6 L cam ROLLER cam followers, to see if they can be used?

Long lived cams!

A steel roller on a cast cam will make for a quick demise of the cam.

What do you mean by a metering valve in the head?

Made some progress into evaluating the engine;

Engine was partially rebuilt in 1978 (date code on bearings), 30 0ver pistons were installed but head was untouched.

Original H cam is still there and in great shape, valve seals were all dried up, oil pump is beautiful, I'll need 40 0ver pistons, bore is beautiful looking but a touch loose on the pistons. EGGE is the only make I've found so far for them. I'm a stock kind of guy, I just want a smooth quiet engine so I prefer to avoid forged pistons.

Forged pistons these days have very low cold clearance so they are quiet. That engine will do well with forgings

Default OIL METERING VALVE;

Located within the head. I have heard reports of these falling out during cleaning process.
I've never had an issue with this, but offer as an FYI.
Only one source for replacement known and not sure still avail;

Thanks Jeff, Is it one in the main oil passage or at each valve? About how big is it? And what holds it in place?

It sits in that hole right there. And for some reason the one in my hand is short compared to "normal". They are easily damaged when removed, but basically need to be tapped out carefully from the bottom. This one came out fine but I trashed the bottom of another one removing it. The hole is tapered and it's a simple interference fit that sits flush with the top of the head and effectively held in place by the cam housing.

I think I'm going to buy all my rebuild parts from EGGE; I need 40 over pistons and I have NOS lifters, rockers, oil pump, water pump and belt, my original cam is fine and all the valve springs check out so it totals up to $1,400 for everything else including the pistons, rings, bearings, gaskets, 12 valves and seals. Seems kind of expensive but buying from a bunch of different suppliers on eBay would only save 10-20%, probably not worth the risk and hassle.

Thoughts? All I want is a nice smooth quiet engine, I probably only drive it 500 miles a year and I'm a cruiser not a racer.

The price seems reasonable. There's no question that these are proprietary parts and we are lucky that these companies stock them.

I just hate having to suck up the exchange rate right now, though.

It does sound on the high side, or is that Canadian dollars? Either way, if you are comfortable with the cost, spend it.

That is parts only in US not including shipping. I'm going for it because at best I'll save $200 by ordering from a bunch of different guys and half the savings will go into shipping not to mention the hassle.

It's a bit pricey but I understand it's a low volume business so tooling gets spread thicker. As several people said, I'm glad just to have them available.
