Default cracked the frame

66 lemans 4 speed
frame cracked on the inside, boxed part, just before the rear kickup, on both sides.
cross member over the rear axle is also cracked.
i'm not in a place where I can pull the body off.
can I weld plates on this?

Yeah, you can Mig or Tig weld it, but weld the cracks first before you weld on the plates. Go at least 8 inches either side of the cracks if you can.... 16" plate or there abouts will work great.

If you can, see if you can stagger 2 or 3 inch holes in the plates. That way you can weld inside the holes to the frame for extra strength. Granted it's more work and a bit of overkill, but I know guys who've done it and they say it's the way to go. It will never come apart and is so much stronger.

Be careful of the gas tank, gas lines, and brake lines. That kind of fire is not you friend.

I would probably

-Find a very level piece of concrete
-Drill out the cracks at each end to stop the spread
-Weld them shut
-Grind flat
-Weld plates over them
-Check them once in a while to make sure everything is cool
