I grew up in Memphis ... going to to West Memphis Ark. and watching some of the best Sprint car and Outlaw racing in the country. Hanging out with Sammy Swindell, Lee Brewer, Hooker Hood at their homes after the races. Great Memories.

I lived in Memphis for almost 2 years so I'm quite familiar with the "Gumbo" West Memphis track. I also used to also frequent Memphis Motorsports park while I lived there, and before they closed the dirt track portion of the facility.

Who won? the #5 black car.

I hate I didn't go Friday night, would have liked to see that one in person.

Sammy Swindell at 62 is still racing winged sprints and winning, won at lest 2 races this year that I'm aware of. His son Kevin was injured and is still fielding a 410 sprint car with a youngster tapped to drive it, Spencer Bayston is the driver.

Factor in this is one of the most intense motorsports there is with over 900 HP naturally aspirated from 410 cubic inches. A 25 square foot wing pushing the car into the track at usually over 100 MPH. The car with driver weighs 1400# so it has an remarkable power to weight ratio and it runs on a closed circuit track running 1/4 mile on dirt at less than 13 seconds.

Track length is usually at least 1/4 mile and can run up to 5/8 mile, although most large tracks are 1/2 mile. 1/3 to 3/8 mile tracks are the most common in length.

Usually 8-10 cars in heat races, 10-20 cars in a B main, and 20-24 cars in a feature. On a big race there can be anywhere to 1- 4 B mains.

Myself I haven't found many motorsports that interest me as much, the running of the Boss Bird on Nitro is the one other type of racing that I'm interested in, but it's over in 6 seconds. Maybe 5 if they're lucky this weekend!!!

Just read that their first run was a losing 6.27 to a 6.17 in the other lane, second run was aborted so no 5 second runs this year.

Not to mention the open wheeled factor, some added anxiety for the fans and drivers no doubt.

Those two guys are askin each other who won, lol.

Yes, the real danger of touching wheels in a gaggle of cars at 100 MPH plus, is an ever-present danger. I have seen a sprint cars touch wheels and launch 25 feet into the air. It happens in a blink of an eye.

If they would put a starter in them (yes, I know that they can't) they would be more interesting to watch.

We have our mandatory once a year sprint car show at my local dirt track. When it's the Outlaw's - they put on a fairly good show. The weekend after labor day the 410's will be there. I've decided to participate in the grape harvest at a local winery instead.

Our local dirt track just had the season championships decided last Saturday. That night of racing was better than any sprint car show I've ever been to. Three classes of modifieds, the Street Stocks and the Super Stocks. More fun watching when you don't have to get the push start vehicles on the track 10 times during a feature race.

Sirrotica ... what years were you in Memphis? I lived there for 17 years as a kid. Left in 1976.

1999-2001, I worked at the United Rentals Aerial lift division on the SW part of town near Graceland/Whiteside area. I had an apartment on the opposite end of town in Bartlett where the Swindell's live. When I lived there Memphis was a high crime town, lots of gunshots in the night, I suspect it's probably the same now.
