Daily dose of numbers.

How many people a year die in the US?
2,712,630 .... yes, 2.71 MILLION people a year.

That is 7,397 people per DAY.
If it's worse than they say, and the virus kills 100,000 people, that would increase our yearly death TOTAL by 3.6%. Or our normal death rate from 0.82 of 1% to 0.85 of 1%

In NYC on the average day 189 people die, before the virus.
Media says the NYC morgues are piling up bodes, bringing in refrigerator trucks. If 20 extra people a day in NYC die from the virus ... that's an additional 10.5% above normal ... hardly cause for piling up bodies, and would mean that NYC morgues are operating at total capacity BEFORE the virus.

It's irresponsible journalism to throw numbers at the average Joe without putting them in understandable perspective.

Global number of COVID-19 cases passes half a million people with 24,000 deaths.

But tonight's news tells us that the number of US citizens has now surpassed the total number of China, Spain & Italy.

Take care friends, this is a world crisis and it needs to be taken much more seriously than it seems we are. I've personally started being much more aware of keeping my personal space safe.

Edit: As I type this I see that it has now been confirmed that Boris Johnson has been confirmed as positive.

500,000 = 0.000066% of the world population.

24,000 deaths = 1 out of every 312,000 people

25,890 people will die this week worldwide in road accidents.

In the last eight weeks since this virus has become widely known ... 207,120 people have died in road accidents worldwide.

I agree with you Dataway, though I still take this event to be very serious.
AND our gas in MD is now $1.94 I heard it will level around $1.50

Oh it's serious, and will get more serious. And anyone in a high risk group should definitely take precautions. Current social distancing and stuff could make a big difference.

My problem is that right now most of the issues and problems seen by the average person is not due to the virus at all, it's due to the panic and over reaction to the virus.

Much like the food situation, no one is eating more food, they are just buying more food, and they are just buying more food because of panic. We are creating additional problems out of thin air, which cascades and leads to serious issues that need not exist at all.

Think about the old woman living alone who has to drive to three different stores to find enough food ... totally unnecessary and totally created by people that have blown this out of proportion.

My wife told me when she was doing our weekly grocery shopping and saw all the toilet paper gone ... she felt a pang of panic ... like she should have gotten some, even though we always have about 30 rolls on hand. That's how it happens, people are inundated with bad news, they see other people panic, they panic, it's human nature that needs to be controlled.

I'll still back up my wager, this virus will never kill more people in a week, than die in road accidents in a week. I don't say that to make light of the situation, but to put it into a perspective the average person can relate to. But people don't want to mentally and emotionally process that, it's in our nature to gear up, respond to a new threat, it's part of our survival mechanism, but can also be our downfall if it's not controlled.

For the past month it keeps dropping
about every day or two - it drops another 3-5 cents.
It has really been wild.
Last night was $1.46
I paid $2.06 for 93 Octane

Diesel hasn't dropped like that though.
It was in the 2.85 range before the drops
Now its around 2.55

Heybuck, the reason our postive numbers are higher is because more people are being tested,

My wife tells me that the Philippines are under Stay At Home orders. Some local officials are punishing offenders by locking them up in a coffin for 8 hours.

Stay at home in effect in Montana at midnight. Store, travel for care for others, travel to recreate outdoors somewhere is OK. It won't change my world of last week or more. Had our first fatality and numbers creeping up.

Tests per 100,000 persons is less in the US. Have to be careful with statistical data.

I feel left out that on the gas prices ... since I'm not driving to work I don't need any gas.

Definitely bringing people together in spirit if not in space. Had numerous friends email me and ask if all is well. Strangely enough the vast majority of the concern is for the economic situation, not the actual virus.

That's how it works in OH as well. The business supplies the workers with the credentials and they can show them if necessary. Ohio law enforcement has said they are busy doing other stuff rather than pulling over random drivers to see where they are going.

THAT is where the majority of the concern SHOUD be.
No hair on fire from the ANNUAL death in the 10s of thousands EVERY YEAR from influenza.
There's an agenda behind the hype.
