Trans crossmember repair?
'64 GTO. The crossmember has typical rust on each mounting tab. Total length is now 53 1/2". A new unit offered by our host is 55". Is it possible, practical and or safe to repair or just replace it?

I've repaired them for many years by cutting off the rusted portion and welding another new section in place of it. The crossmember isn't structural lending strength to the frame itself, it just basically holds the weight of the rear of the engine and transmission in place.

Absolutely can be repaired. I would overlap it vs. butt weld it.

I had the one in my '67 GTO repaired by welding over 30 years ago. Not an issue.
