From my research of various sources, the codes for this transmission should be J/PS. But on my transmission the code is PX. The PX identification code is for the 1968 tranny of the same type. My question is why dosen't my GTO have supposedly the correct code. I believe my tranny is original with the rest of the car.
Thanks - John

PX sounds correct to me...for a 4BBL carb.

2bbl MIGHT be different

On my auto 67 GTO, the tranny had a tag on the case that had PS stamped onto it. That car was built during the 4th week of January 1967 in KC. When was your car built. According to the GTO restoration guide, late in the production year of 67, the PS tranny was replaced with PX trannys. It doesnt say when. So, you probably do have the original. To confuse things further, the PX code was also used in 69 and 71 on GTOs. Can you find any other distinguishing numbers? like a 9791682 on the transmission assembly.

One other think, the code PT was used on 2bbl GTOs. There was also PQ trannys used on Ram Air cars.

The part numbers are
PS - 9777928
PT - 9777927
PQ - 9789928

Thanks Injun for solving my mystery. My 67 gto was built in March, 67 a late production model, and like you said would have the PX code on the tranny. Two more questions 1. is there any difference between the PS and PX coded tranny other than identification and 2. what resource did you find this in.(I thought I had collected all the restoration guides for gtos in the universe, and none of mine mention this difference). Much appreciate your info. John

Glad I could help. The source I used was "Pontiac GTO Restoration Guide 1964-1972", Paul Zazarine and Chuck Roberts, pp 295-296. Apparently, the differences were internal pieces like Control Valve Assembly, Front Accumulator Spring. What that means I have no clue, perhaps someone more knowledgeable with auto trannys can chime in.
