Default Original or after market exhaust

I have an all original 78 ws6 w72 4 speed ta with 73000 miles. I want a more aggressive exhaust tone. Would it hurt the value if I replaced the original with a better flowing exhaust ?

what do you want? a exhaust system can be changed, your never going to get a aggressive sound ,WILL NOT happen with stock exhaust, Me personally have after market exhaust on both my TA and Camaro, I hate that stock sound muffled jet exhaust

If it’s a well thought out and installed system, it will only add value to the car, my opinion. The purists that have to have everything 100 percent bone stock don’t live near me...

I doubt it would affect the value at all. If youre that concerned be careful with the removal of the old so that it can be re-installed and put a nice set of oversized free flowing pipes and mufflers. That will liven the motor up a bit. Anything you can bolt on and off is an easy fix.

If mufflers and tail pipes are in good shape.... I'd swap the Y-pipe and cat converter to true duals and keep the factory mufflers.

Factory Cats are very restrictive. Factory Cat without a muffler is not objectionable, Aftermarket Cat with a performance muffler would not be, either & sound bitcin'.
Happy cruising!

My 81 I had to use cats to clean up the idle when they were still doing the sniffer. So dual aftermarket 2.5 cats, dual turbo mufflers where the dual resonators were factory location on the 220 HP TA motor. The Macho TAs had dealer installed dual cats.

Kinda Rare to see original exhaust on a W72 car, Well just about any 70's car for that matter.

I would for sure try to save the original, system & just replace all of it if you want something better. I think it would be a shame to modify the original parts. might be tough to remove it without cutting some pipes though.....

But I am a nut about originality so, my opinion is skewed a bit

Have the rustfree exhaust system out of my '80 Turbo T/A hanging up high snug to the end of one of the 14' tall pallet rack sections in my shop. Wish I'd have kept the original small mufflers when I cut them off in 1981 & replaced them with straight pieces of pipe. Will be reusing the system in the '80, as its in great shape & worked fine.

Totally agree with the above posts to save the original Y back pipe & small muffler/tailpipe system if it's anywhere close to great shape. For the last few decades, its been very rare to come across original '78-81 T/A tailpipes with nice condition original part # embossed mufflers, even on low mile TATA's. Installing a "test pipe" in place of the restrictive pellet type Cat is what many of us did in the late '70's & early 80's. You will definitely like the sound, with no convertor & just the oem small stock mufflers the sound at idle & under accelleration is far from a "muffled jet exhaust".

On my 80 Turbo SE, the autoparts stores & Nunzi & HO Racing at the time, didn't even offer the '80 test pipes with the big ball mount on the front of the pipe. Had to make one at the time with a ball joint off a boogered up '80 Cat from local late model yard.

On a side note. I wonder what the status is with the Gardner exhaust system? Last pict I saw it was nice, except the mid Y pipe was the ball type, not the flat 4 bolt style found in the 78 & 79 W72's. I have a complete system that came out of a 78 before the car had 1000 miles on it. Still has assembly markings on the cat converter. So many weird kinks & clearance areas in those tail pipes, I am not sure it those could ever be reproduced to look 100% oem?

Rare but doesn't add value having an original and beat up 40 yr old restrictive exhaust. Time to look after the car and treat it and yourself.

I have the original cat off my 78 TA! Just not on it.

I have mine too. It is the huge pellet converter, Supposedly high flowing unit. It looks the same to me as all the other converters did back then. Didn't seem to be any performance gain with a test pipe...

I guess the exhaust systems were already so restrictive that freeing it up further back didn't help much.
