670 header gaskets
Hello all, have 670 heads and need new header gaskets, rather than crawling under to unbolt and look,... I’d like to order them first
They are D port right? Or oval thank you |

D port on 670 heads.
Round port is the other choice, which you don't have. |

Yes, D port, but when you get them in hand you will see that they are D port in the center paired Exh ports and oval on the end ports.
Save yourself a pain in the ass and when you get the old ones out reinstall the 6 bolts and let the header hang loose on them, then cut the gasket with a steel sheer into 3 sections ( end ports and center port) and then slot the bolt holes in the gaskets and then you will be able to just slip each gasket section in and not fight the bolts into place.

If you want to stop the header gasket leaks, coat them with high temp RTV before installing them, let the RTV skin over for 15-20 minutes before the install. Tighten them down, and let them sit overnight before starting the car.
After a couple heat and cool cycles re-tighten the bolts, you should have no problems after doing this, unless the header flanges are not somewhat flat. Nothing can help badly warped gasket surfaces but welding them up and grinding or filing them flat again. Cutting the header flanges between the end ports and the center ports will sometimes allow the flanges to lay flat against the head and seal better if they are mildly warped. Good luck, headers on a Pontiac are challenging, but I believe worth the effort. |
