Default Anyone ever make an adpater to mount stereo in 70-80 Firebird map pocket

I have a 78 Trans Am with the stock single front and rear speaker and the stock am/fm radio. I have been thinking about adding a better stereo. I saw on 78TA.com that many moons ago someone was making a 'Console mounted stereo adapter' - http://www.78ta.com/HTAF/index.php?topic=37692.0 . It appears fbodywarehouse was selling this same stereo adpater. Though from what I can see the adapter is no longer available - either via 78TA or fbodywarehouse.
.
I have a decent name brand (pioneer?) deck that has been lying around for 4-5 years. It has a USB port. I had this deck mounted in another car and I had all my music in mp3 format on a USB stick and the deck worked fine. I was thinking of mounting this deck in my 78 TA (Id just keep stock am/fm radio also).
.
Mounting a stereo in the firebird console map pocket looks like a good idea. I can just leave stock radio and mount my aftermarket deck in the map console map pocket. Has anyone ever made an adapter to mount a standard size aftermarket cd player/deck in the firebird console map pocket ? If yes, any tips/advice for making the bracket ?

I had an equalizer mounted there in my 78.

In the Camaro/IA I have the data logger mounted there.

I've done just as Skip mentioned, had an equalizer mounted there in another car back in the 80's. Pretty easy to fab.

I wonder if the factory 8 track bracketry would get you closer to having a radio fit? That's where GM would mount an 8 track if so optioned.

I would assume those brackets are available aftermarket? Or used.

Are you sure FBody Warehouse doesn't carry it?

If not, see if Firebird Central can.

My car is a 80 with a cover plate. Made a bracket with a cabinet hinge so it flips up and stays. Mounted radio behind it.

Hey Big Bear , I like that install - good idea ! The hinged door allows you to close and keep more of a stock appearance - which I also would prefer. Did you make the door out of some wood ? looks like a recessed area in middle top - is that for ash tray? Also looks like some screws in either side? Plus some nice trim around the outside. Any tips on making the door ? how to install the hinge? I have a wood working buddy I could ask for some help.

I put mine in the glove box. Recreated the factory glove box in aluminum, only not as deep, added some 1/4" thick wood to match the dash. Installed an infrared repeater so i could use the remote with the glovebox door closed. I also made the radio delete plate.

The 80 normally has its computer mounted behind the cover. The cover is original and had clips attaching it. They were broke at some time and two screws were use to attach the plate. Welded a piece of flat bar to the hinge and used the two screws to attach the door to the flat bar. Just made a similar aluminium plate in the Camaro for the AFR gauge.
