The U.S. was assigned K and W as the first digit of start their radio and TV call signs and Canada was assigned C and L. CKLW simply combined these four letters for their Canadian station which was across the Detroit River from the U.S.

I also grew up in Cleveland listening to CKLW from Detroit/Windsor. That's the way they said it on the air, Detroit followed by Windsor although it was a Windsor station. I also remember finding that "new" rock and roll station, WIXY 1260 when it came on the air in I think about 1965, listening on my "transistor radio". It had a 9 volt battery that you could stick on your tongue and get a mild shock. This was high tech stuff back then.

By the way, Cleveland used to have KYW as radio and TV stations. Some how swapped with I think Philly and it changed to WKYC and KYW moved there. So we had both "K" and "W" station call signs in the 60s.

Just little thinkin, as I think of CKLW back in the day and being from a little town of Tiffin, Ohio all our factories here was reliant on Detroit. especiallt GM. We have to bring GM back walking past all the venders in Dayton this weekend I see more Taiwan stuff then GM or American made. I know big buisness is hard to control and they made big mistakes, but they are moving forward and so should we. In the 60's GM always listen to the little guys and they built his car. That is what America is the best at! Now I ask, Like Detroit native Marvin Gaye did WHATS GOING ON! If we do not rebuild Detroit we will not rebuild America. A couple of weeks ago on Fathers day we all jump in the 1965 GTO pack the trunk full and went to Lake Erie spent the day there and if I had 10 people, I had 100 talk to me about being back in the day and I have never went to the lake in any other car and had that much conversation, it was the best Fathers day ever! But our 12 year old daughter did ask how did you talk to each other going 55 mph ecspecially if you are riding back seat with all the windows down! Well she did learn how to raise her voice. Just wanted to say had a great week in Dayton did not get to talk to all of you and I do miss CKLW and PONTIAC! OH I forgot Like another Detroit Band said I'm Losing you! I SAY AMERICA I HOPE I AM NOT LOSING YOU!THANKS!

WIXY 1260.............Yep I remember WIXY. Remember "WIXY's BACK!" with BACK being backwards? I still have one of those bumper stickers. LOL. I remember listening to CKLW as well. It didn't come in clear all the time in CLeveland but I remember hearing it once in awhile.

"Thank you for the music" cheers to ABBA and CKLW
And to the rest of the Detroit radio scene 50's-70's

My favorite detroit memory: The teenybopper stations are announcing "The Argent concert!!!!!!!!!!!!! featuring Frank Zappa"
The AOR stations announce "Frank Zappa!!!!!"

All through Argent's time on stage (They played a medley of their hit "Hold your head up"), the audience shouted for Zappa. After Zappa arrived on stage, the concert was wonderful.

Regards

I remember SUNDAY DETROIT DRAGWAY---ROY O"BRIAN CARS AND TRUCKS AT NINE MILE AND MACK. CKLW was alot more powerful than alot of stations. Listened to WTAC and WTRX out of Flint Mi. also but CKLW was my favorite when cruising in my GTO's cause I could always pick them up and had the best tunes. Am I getting old or what?

Hey you guys now you went and did it. I grew up outside Milwaukee WI, and we had our stations as I'm sure all the big cities did. I'm sitting here getting goose bumps and really waxing sentamental here. I've always flashed back to a certain car that I had when certain songs came out or were replayed constantly. I sure would love to go back to those days for just one minute or two to remember what it was like to be young and stupid, instead of old and stupid, heh!! I just took a great trip in the way back machine thanks to your post here, and I thank you for that. Gotta dig out my penny loafers, black sox, find a glass bottled Coke. Mark L

Time to bring back to the top, With everything going on in the USA, CKLW was just a side bar of what was going on in Detroit in the 60s. Detroit was the greatest Manufacturing City in the world! Now how do we pick up the parts and build what we did back in the day. What comes around goes around, Lets go back to work, listen to music, talk the talk and walk the walk! Bring it on, we can build the best cars in the world. LONG LIVE PONTIAC! Love all of you THANKS for keeping the hobby going TAKE CARE! When you get a chance visit Detroit!

Default WKNR Geeto Tigers

Hold on there Candian Breath!!!!!!!!!! While CKLW had the Strongest signal.....

It was WKNR that Jim Wangers did the tie in with the 1966 Geeto Tiger program. In fact the Mystery Tiger, John Politzer, raced Dick Purtain who never shifted out of first and over rev'd one of the GTO's causing some bent push rods and valves. LOL Oh the good old days.

One Year during the Dream Cruise I delivered Jim Wangers' Art work of the Geeto Tigers' at Motor City Dragway with a message to Dick Purtain and Al "Muskaveto" Muscovitz (whom I'm freinds with) "We still remember". Al made sure the story got on the air.

MH - is that you Mark from Tiffan, OH?

Dick Purtain once discussed why he moved over to CKLW. It was because the signal went out over lake Erie and on a clear day would be picked up all the way to PA.

SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY....You must be refering to the radio ad for Detroit Drag Way that the owner Gil Kohen came up with and put all over the airways. Depending on which day he was promoting, Friday night, Saturday or Sunday.

SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY AT DETROIT DRAG WAY SEE JIM WANGERS ROYAL PONTIAC TAKE ON THE RAM CHARGERS, HAMILTON MOTORS GOLDEN COMMANDOS AND BOB FORD. NORM RUBY IN HIS FORD RACING BILL SIDWELL'S PONTENT PONTIAC AND ROGER LINDAMOOD WITH HIS "COLOR ME GONE". Along with ART ARFONS AND HIS JET POWERED GREEN MONSTER. THAT IS SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY AT DETROIT DRAGWAY. TAKE TELEGRAPH ROAD TO SIBLEY ONE HALF MILE TO DIX.

I listened to CKLW, as well as WBZ (Boston), WLS (Chicago), WABC (NYC) and WKBW (Buffalo) at Basic Training at Fort Jackson, SC. I also picked them up in various cities on the Gulf Coast in LA and TX. They were a slice of home, as we listened to them in high school, in the car, at night, while cruising.

Eric

I remember buying that album years back online and being very disappointed as it didn't even have Little GTO on it

The Big 8! I could hear it all the way down to my Grandmother's house in Elyria, OH. I remember being mystified driving back seeing the big Fisher Body trucks with only "part" of a car on them. Dad, the Ford man explained GM was so big and rich they could pay someone else to make them for them, they would just put the body on the frame and then sell 'em.
