Default High Port timing

I had my first outing last week after having to redo my whole engine from last year. I ended up with a little smaller cam 273/277 , ground on a 104 and installed on a 104. Car ran the same as last year so wasnt surprised. .

I had the timing locked at 30 and decided to drop down to 28. I picked up a .1 in the 1/8 and 1.39 in the 60 ft and 6.49. I was surprised how much it picked up, all this time i thought 30 was where it needed to be. I tried 27 and lost .05 so went back to where it was.

Sounds like a good improvement.

Cool ! 28 is the place to be for you. Can you tell us more about the engine. The High Port engine I am doing is pump gas, 4500 with a 1050 also.

Interesting! I had read that some engines with High Ports liked 28 degrees. The only engine I built for a customer that had those heads on it was a aluminum block 505" . That particular engine liked 32 degrees on the dyno. Real life at the drag strip may show something different though.

My na 535 with 390 cfm Kauffman D ports loves 39 but that is at 9000 density altitude. The 505 with high ports is the same.
I'm in denver at Bandamier mostly.
But even at 1200 feet the car ran best at 32.5.
Fyi the engin info is:
535
C14 gas 68 cc high ports T&D shafted crank driven msd 6al... old school lol
The track tells the truth. Pontiacs like alot of advance up here. Some pontiac guys up here are at 40 and happy. My 535 d ported car picked up .1 moving from 32.5 to 39 degrees. The 505 high port set up wasn't quite as much increase but much heavier car too.

Fuel plays a big roll in timing as does other factors. Basically every engine will be slightly different and you need to test to find out what works
