Figured I'd post this here for better exposure than the suspension section. This is on a 73 firebird Pro Tour type build that Im helping a friend with, he bought a full PTFB coil over suspension kit along with the willwood brake upgrade they sell for front & rear, hes also using their 1LE spindles for 3rd gens, tubular upper A-arms...
For anyone thats done the wilwood brakes, which dust shields are used for that set up? The rotors are obviously bigger than stock do are there bigger dust shields available or do we use the stock 2nd gen ones of 3rd gen ones? The original 73 shields seem to fit the 1LE spindles ok but wont be very functional with the bigger rotors, or is that all thats available? |

For what it's worth I've been running Wilwoods on my 67 Firebird for 17 years without any dust shields on fronts or rears. That being said I don't get it out nearly as much as I should and I'm still on my original set of pads. LOL

I’m running big Baer brakes on a protouring 70 Firebird (Detroit Speed suspension)…no dust shields…never occurred to me. I’ve driven it a couple thousand miles since I finished it last year.

I can't offer any info regarding dust shields however I can report using the Wilwood Front Brake Kit part number 140-8582 / 12.49 inch undrilled rotors with 15-inch wheels.
Vintage 15x7 p/n 345-5761 Tires are Cooper 245/60-15 Also installed are QA1 double adjustable shocks P/N TD507 with Global West upper & lower F-body tubular control arms. I can report no issues. .

thanks for the info.. will suggest using no dust shields... its not a daily driver, just a fair weather car so shouldnt be a concern.
I wasnt involved with ordering the parts from PTFB but they sell a 1LE spindle that is for 2nd gens cars, my friend has them now and said the 2nd gen dust shields seem to fit & bolt up ok but its just at the mocking stage now. https://www.pro-touringf-body.com/pr...e/1le-spindles |

I've never used dust shields on big brake upgrades. I wouldn't worry about it.

Yes, PTFB reworked the 79-96 B HD spindle - they will take the 1970-81 F dust shield if desired.

I have seen arguments for both running them and not.
One opinion is that they hold in heat. Another sent to me a bit ago concerning MGB's is they help by keeping the rotors dry backed by some track data. Newer trucks don't have them or have vestigial shields. I went with none on our kits as they pushed the product above a price point customers wanted to pay. |
