160 MPH speedo - GM, or repop - which is it?
When I purchased my 78 TA, the owner gave me this 160mph speedo in case I wanted to install it. I know these are available reproduction. The part # 6492882 W is on the back, and I know that coincides with the reproductions. However, there's also a stamp that says Feb2 1971. It this a genuine GM part? Odomert reads 63,394.0, which leads me to believe that it could be. Thank you for any help you can provide.

that's an original speedo all right.
That speedometer is from a 1971 model year car to be precise. The speedo to swap in your 78 TA is the 1972.5-1974 speedo - not the 1970-1972.5 speedo; Midway through the 1972 model year the seat belt warning system was added - this changed the speedo face - where it used to only have a (parking) brake warning at the bottom of the speedo, it now had both a (parking) brake & seat belt lights. Here is a (faded) 1975-1978 speedo: Here is a 1972.5-1974 speedo: (these are not exactly the best pictures, but I tried to find two similar sized images which showed the speedo face with the brake & seat belt warning light spots.) I hope this helps!
