Default Exhaust leak

I just can't stop small leaks at the manifolds and down pipes.
Is there a Gasket for this or some type of sealer that would work?

Thanks, Dave

Stock there’s a steel shim gasket at the head exh flange to manifold.

They do not compress much so if you have warped exh manifolds you will have to switch to a header gasket.

If you use new bolts that are too long on the center ports then they can bottom out in the blind holes before you get them tight enough.

In the same vein as those two bolts the outer ones on each end if too long will bottom out also.

In terms of the down pipes to the outlet of the exh manifold I have made long rolls of aluminum foil to get a great seal on this coupling area.

Here again bolts that are too long will be a issue on these flange holes that are not blind, sometimes new bolts may not be overlong, but the unthreaded shank might be too long.

High temp RTV will seal most exhaust leaks at joints, many use it in place of header gaskets. It will not burn up at high temperatures, as many people believe.

If you can let it set up for 24 hours after assembly before starting the engine, is your best bet. I've been using it to seal exhaust sine the mid 80s, I have one set of headers installed in 1988, that are still leak free with RTV on the head flanges. The first time I saw it used to seal exhaust was on a cracked turbo housing on a big truck, I was sure it would burn up, but even used on a turbo, it held up just fine.

Since Pontiac engineers never used gaskets on the head pipe to manifold connections they sometimes do leak, sealing the joint with RTV shold work fine for a tight seal.

Permatex also recommends in their instructions that it can be used to seal exhaust systems.

Thanks, Tin foil, I wouldn't have guessed that would work. Smart.
I always thought RTV would break down with the heat, but what do I know. lol
Thanks guys

Ultra copper is the high temp rtv.
Put a layer on any opening you plan to seal, AND let it set up, then assemble what ever your repairing.

I put a thin smear on both sides of header gaskets, it does make a difference!!!

I have found RemFlex to work well in tough situations.
