Default Barn find 84 trans am

First I am a GTO guy with little knowledge on Trans Am. With that in mind help me out a little here.

I looked at an 84 trans am today with less than 10,000 miles on it. Last registered in 1994. With the exception of the sagging headliner the car is spotless.. No rust, all original. Still has the original tires on it.

It is Black with the gold stripes and has the small firechicken on the ram air hood bump with 5.0 Liter HO badgeing on the hood. Under the hood the the fibrglass is sagging a little bit & it caused a little rust on the air cleaner. It is a 5 speed. has the gold or tan interior. Original owner has all the original paperwork. Bought new out west and trailered to Ohio in 96. It has sit in a nice garage since.

Based on what I describe what would be a reasonable price to pay for this car. I appreciate any input. It could be in my garage by the end of the week.

If it starts up & will run or with just a little bit of tune up work & fluids changed I would think any thing under $ 6500.00 would be a good buy. BUT,,, make sure the underneath is in good shape to & there is no frame damage that will be costing a bunch to fix. I would start out as low as you can, ask him what he wants for it before you just make any offer. Be honest with him & say you don't know what it should be worth & let him give you a starting point. The reason I say this is his price may just be a real low one because he just wants to get rid of it. If he keeps saying that you should make an offer , then tell him you don't want to make him mad with to low of a price but IF he insists you give him an offer start at $ 2500.00 & see what his face looks like with that offer. If he takes it you got yourself a good car at a good price, but to he may say thats TO MUCH & tell you something lower. But again if you get it between the $ 2500.00 & $ 6500.00 range it sounds like you may have a good deal. 10K is very low mileage & if it runs I might be tempted to just clean it up & dive it as a survivor. Play as dumb as you can & tell him your not looking to beat it up but to take good care of it, that may make a big difference to if he's had it that long he may just want someone to care for it the way he would have done a long time ago.

If the 8th digit in the VIN is a G then it's an L69 and the top HP engine combo of the year. It was the 2nd year for the engine, there were 7,051 5-spds built in 1984 and it would have come with a 3:73 rear.

Although low miles I would expect there will be A LOT of work required to make the car driveable & reliable including brakes, carb, heater core etc.. Pay as little as you can, if you are planning on keeping it, dive in & if you are planning on selling it, just clean it up & put it on ebay.

To put it in perspective, I paid $3,750 for a two owner 66,000 mile L69 83 Z28 with good paperwork earlier this year and have almost double that into it. With only 3,223 built they are not easily found but not rare either.

Is this a T-top car? I have an '84 5-speed L69 that I bought in 1987 with just under 10K miles on it at the time. Mine has never seen winter and runs and drives like new yet. They are good performing cars for their day. Mine has a little over 60K on it and I wouldn't sell it for less than 6K. Third gens haven't seen huge price increases yet, but I think their day may be coming. Mine will likely be passed on to one of my kids someday.

Nice clean low mile 3rds are starting to bring some decent coin, like 20k or more. The 1992 Firehawks are already in the 75k area for a base car.

Over 30 years old now as hard as that may be to believe!

Muscle Collector (Gary) and I joke about this all the time. It's like the good old days of the muscle cars where you can buy decent parts cars for a couple hundred and decent cars can be bought cheaply. Yes there are some cars that are jumping and fetching big dollars but most are still relatively cheap. The jump however, is coming!

I've got a relatively lo-mile 91 T/A 'vert that I bought in 93.

It's been parked for almost 20 years.....think I might start driving it again...

Or you could sell it to one of us!

I bought this 94 Anniversary Edition for $1,600 and then another one for $1,000. Same guy bought both.

I picked up this 88 Firebird for $600 last week, the interior is perfect and I could probably sell the stereo in it for that much.

These are pics that I took during test drive...and right after I bought it in 93...

It was a year and a half old... and had only 700 miles on it..

Think I need to go have a look in the back of the barn...and see if I can find it...

As I recall.....there was about 500 each year...and only around 100 5 speeds each year...

What is the backstory on this front end and windshield crater damage - hit a horse, moose or cowabunga?
