Best way to match paint?
My 68 has factory red interior but I can’t seem to find info for the code. I’ve been told regimental and solar but no idea. Looking at my dash po tried repainting sections but luckily on the bottom section.
I want to just repaint the entire bottom half. Last edited by supersport#69; 11-06-2020 at 11:33 AM. |

I used the Regimental Red from NPD. Very close to original.
Keep in mind, the original red is often faded after 52 years and won't look exactly to what's offered by the various vendors.

The PPG paint chip chart at the auto color library website has interior paint codes and combinations: https://www.autocolorlibrary.com/pag...HorizontalTab1 and https://www.autocolorlibrary.com/pag...HorizontalTab2 You'd have to match the paint codes to modern paint, but it gives you a starting point.

If I’m reading that right it looks like exterior is solar and interior is regimental (darker red)

As requested...
If you notice the ashtray is just a slight brighter. It was painted a different shade of red and I haven't finished with it yet. The interior is Regimental and the dash top is 0% Burgundy. I used the Burgundy across the rear window surround too.

So I just got off the phone and the info I’m getting is Bolero red is a direct match with regimental red from Valspar.
Ppg cross reference 71583. Does this sound right? |

That looks really good. I’m getting choices of acrylic, urethane or base coat. Which did you use?

Yes, Bolero is a good match.

I got my dark turquoise interior paint matched from the original color code at TCP Global. It is a SEM product. They match it and sell it either in quart cans or spray bomb. Color NAMES can be confusing. I go by the manufacturer's color code if I can.

I got the color worked out now with bolero red just in a debate with painter friend. I can get bolero red in acrylic, urethane, and base.
I planned to do urethane but he says no and he is recommending base because he says it will be more durable and easier to repair. My thinking was he will have to do more area on the dash of base because of the clear. |

Yeah I prefer it not shiny too. Would original have been more like acrylic or urethane?

Acrylic lacquer. 60% gloss on the dash except between the pad and the windshield, where it is 0% gloss. Many over-restored cars out there with glossy dashes that look great until you try to drive the car!

My painter wants to do bc/cc on exterior too and against single. I think he just likes shiny or maybe he has had bad experiences...I don’t know.
Your burgundy single looks really good still. Do you recall what brand you used? Is the quality today as good? |

I still have the can with some paint in it! It's Dupont Centari Acrylic Enamel, Single stage. Keep in mind the car was painted in 1993, so it's 27 years old. And has a lot of miles on the car since then. It's held up better than any base/clear paint I can think of. It say's it's lead free, but I think it's the old solvent based stuff, not water based.
