Default 68 GTO Power Window Wiring

Helping my dad with his 68 GTO

Can somebody explain how the power windows are supposed to get power? Right now I have no power at the power Acc spot on the fuse block (there is also a metal slug, not a fuse). The way the windows are currently set up is a a wire plugs in to the spade connector at the Acc power slot on the fuse box.

Where is the wiper relay located? Anyone have a good diagram to follow?

I know this has been hacked up over the years, trying to figure out the right way.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I assume you mean the power relay for the windows? It should be up higher at the drivers kick panel at about the level of the bottom of the dash iirc.

One wire goes to the battery lug on the fuse box & the other is accessory that powers up the relay. I have a complete wiring harness hour of my car if you need to know wire colors, etc. It shouldn't like your problem is at the fuse box possibly? I'll take a peek at what I have.

Take a look where the wire harness's go under the carpet below the fuse block. You will see a black connector that goes to the rear window motors. Just above that plug you should have an orange wire (black stripe) that goes to batt (continuous 12V) in the fuse block, then the pinkish red wire goes to accessory (12v when the key is on)

I took a picture of the harness for my 68 for you.

Also, keep in mind that these harness's were notorious for the wires breaking, or even shorting in the jamb boot. I still have to rebuild & re-wrap my harness's & when I do, I am going to add a ground wire into each door too.

Found the plug for the power window relay, but no relay. I ordered one and will have it tomorrow.

The plug has one constant hot wire and one ignition hot wire. It's a spliced mess under the dash but I think I'm making progress.

I see the orange with black tracer wire but the pink wire is not plugged in to the tang on the fuse box like it is supposed to. Still looking for it under the dash.

The only reason the relay is in there is because the switched ignition power sources can't quite handle the current draw of the window motors. So when you supply 12V to the pink wire when the key is on, the relay connects the orange to the unswitch "batt" connection while energized. I have all of my harness's still out of the car if you need me to check anything for you.

My power window relay will not be here for a few days, but I tested the windows by jumping the conector and the windows work as they should, so as soon as I have the relay to plug in we are all set!

Just curious, where did you get the relay? did you order a universal type or something similar to oe?

Ordered from Ames. I have heard a universal one would be fine since they all function the same, but I figured we should just get the correct one.

Plugged in the new relay and at first I still couldn't get the windows to work. Then I realized it needs to be grounded! Bolted it down and the windows work as they should now!

Cool, yes the whole system including each window motor relies on a chassis ground. All the wires in the harness are 12V feeds. Glad you have it working again!
