Default 1968 GTO Power Steering Reservoir Cap

Am in the process of a frame off restoration of a 1968 GTO convertible. Plan is to restore it to factory original. Question is: Was the Power Steering reservoir cap metal or plastic? Thanks for any information.

Both of my 68's (Lemans) have black plastic caps.

Yep, black plastic ... with some raised lettering on it I think. Can take a picture if you need one.

Here's what mine looks like. Pretty certain its an original part.

Looking at the picture I see its a little dirty around the letters though..... :roll eyes:

Many thanks for all the feedback and photo. My cap is metal, so I'll have to find an original plastic one.

Anything definitive on which power steering cap is correct for 1968? Ames catalog shows silver cad metal cap for 1964-70 and round black plastic for 1971-77, but I seem to see the black one typical on many 68-69 GTOs as stated in this thread. Just wondering if the metal one was original from factory and the black plastic was swapped in as the power steering pumps were replaced? Anyone have any insight?

No real definitive insight but both of my ‘68’s have their original low mileage engines intact and hard to believe the black plastic caps on mine and others who have posted had theirs swapped from metal to plastic.
BTW both are spring ‘68 Arlington builds so maybe that’s something?

I had two caps like the one I posted in #4 Both 68 Pontiac MI cars. (January & April) One was from a lemans & that one I know was original. My GTO was the same cap, but that car had many owners & mods before I restored it. But from the other car, I assume dit was correct.

Thanks all, sounds pretty definitive. Sticking with the black cap on my April Arlington built.
