Default Axle Vent - What is Correct...Metal/Plastic

From my understanding the 3820840 White w/White Cap is what to be considered correct as Green caps were a later production after 1973 but my 69 56,000 original mile axle has a Metal vent in it and 99% of this car has not been taken apart. The assembly manual states the 3820840 was replaced in 68 with a 1171317 vent which I am assuming is Metal.

Can anyone verify this, did a bunch of searching and could not find anything.

Thanks

I know what you are referring to as I have found the metal axle vent cap on the "N" cased axle housings for '69 and up. Any chance your gear ratio is 3.55, 3.90 or 4.33? Hope this helps. Also the 1171317 vent is the metal one.

Yes Paul, it’s a HD option 3.90 with the M21 If that matters. That’s good info, Thanks
