I have a 1976 400 and need a oil pump drive rod.I bought a melling from a local auto store.It has 2 notches which doesnt allow it to drop all the way down.Can these filled off or does anyone know about this. Thanks

Filing or grinding off the two 'notches' is commonly done when installing it from the top since that's the only way it will go in from up there.
It is usually installed from the bottom but some builders forget to put it in before the oil pump and oil pan go on, hence the fairly common removal of the offending 'notches'. I've only forgotten to put the oil pump drive in, before the oil pump, once. Like b-man said just grind off the tangs. Be sure to clean it thoroughly before you install it.
