Actual calculated static CR is 9.98:1. 467" (455 with a 4.200" bore and stock 4.210" stroke), 430 CBHP @ 5100 and 530 CBTQ @ 2900 on 93 octane pump unleaded.

Looks (and sounds - except for the solid lifter music) like a stone stock HO under the hood, manifolds and all.

Thanks Lloyd,
I was curious because my engine was originally put together almost 20 years ago and it has TRW domes in it.
Had it on the chassis dyno last fall 380 HP @ 4900 480 lbs ft @ 3400
running very lean.
I didn't have any jets with me to correct it at that time.
I will be making another trip to the dyno this spring hoping for some better numbers.

Thanks

Your engine is making a BUNCH more than mine, as the numbers I posted for my engine were from engine dyno pulls.

Running through a single (non-PYPES) crossflow muffler mine only made 299 CBHP @ 5300 on a Mustang chassis dyno. We couldn't get a decent torque number on mine on the chassis dyno runs.

I didn't have an O2 sensor hooked up for my chassis dyno runs, so I have no idea if it was running lean, fat or what, LOL!

thought I'd bring this post back to the top.. Any word on the work Mark Weymouth was doing on the maximum performance stock 455SD motor they were going to build and dyno? I hadn't thought about it in a while but would love to get an update.

Ditto, Rick.

Haven't heard anything from Mark in a while.

Default Head Gasket Thickness???

How do you know how thick your head gasket will be after you torque it? Should I have asked for a specific thickness, cc's, volume, etc? I just wanted to calculate my C.R. I cc'd my heads and they are 105 (originally 111cc's, cut .030"). Just guessing that my gasket squeezed to .035" I calculated my C.R. to be 8.9:1 based on the following: 4.18" bore, 4.21" stroke, 105 cc's heads, .001" deck (almost zero deck), 6 cc's (estimate) valve reliefs and head gasket at .035".Thanks, Eddie

Often, there are voids where the gasket doesn't exist between the machined surfaces of the head and the deck. You can use feeler gauges to measure.

Thanks a lot Mike and Gregg for the responses. I really felt dumb after seeing what Gregg was talking about with the nooks and crannies where you can put a feeler or a wire gauge between the head and the block. Why didn't I think of that? I went back out to the garage and checked it.....040"...not .035", back to the drawing board. Thanks a lot Gregg, I learned something. That's always a plus. Thanks again to both of you. Mike, I'll PM ya just to see what it should be according to part number.

Thumbs up PURE STOCK DRAGS Primer JULY HPP

If you haven't got the (new) July HPP yet,you better hustle & pick one up.(before they are sold out)

It's gotta be one of the most interesting issues of late.

FIRST on the "must read" list is a VERY INFORMATIVE article on the PURE STOCK MUSCLECAR DRAGS,written by Mark Weymouth ,forum member & contributor to this (455 HO) thread.
Photography by 455 HO "Hot Shoe" Dan Jensen.

VERY informative article outlining the concept, history & rules of the Pure Stock Drags.

SECOND on the list is a "Shootout",featuring FOUR Pure Stock RAM AIR Pontiacs(including Jim Mino's NOTORIOUS first gen Bird & a Lucerne Blue 4 speed 70 T/A)

THIRD is a 7 page article on a 63 Catalina 421 SD written by Forum member Rocky Rotella.

GREAT stuff here if you like reading about "stock" Pontiacs & what they can do on the track.

ENJOY!

Thumbs up PURE STOCK DRAGS Primer JULY HPP

Great issue, and the next several issues will show different engine combos and more to come in the Pure Stock Prep School series.

Definitely a great issue.

I was just reading the Pure Stock article this morning. The intro to it was great, and a good sales pitch for Pure Stock, too. Mark should be a novel writer!

More motivation for me to go this route with my RAIII Formula when I restore it. I think the Formula has the potential to be slightly quicker than a comparably built RAIII T/A because it's a bit lighter and has probably a more effective "ram air" system. This would be true of the '71/'72 455 HO cars as well (gratuitous comment to keep the thread on topic...).

But alas, it will be several years before I even start on it
Have to keep this issue near the top of the stack...

i generally love HPP magazine (ok, i admit, i love pretty much anything about vintage pontiacs) - i'd sure like to see a few more pages of worthy content, though - it's getting skinnier every month, it seems.
i think there is a degree of serious, scholarly professionalism other brands' home-team stuff is missing.

on a different note, IS ANYONE GONNA RUN A COMPRESSION CHECK FOR ME?!?!?!?!?!?
pull ONE easy to reach plug, pull the coil primary wire, and spin it a few times - that's all i'm asking - it takes approximately 6 minutes, in total.
i've helped about a million people on PY - someone wanna return the courtesy please?
some tuning and a tune-up and coil upgrade have made mine a far happier HO - but it still ain't 100% and before i go in and yank the cam for a smaller grind, i'd SURE LIKE TO KNOW WHAT A STOCK HO DOES for cranking compression, please!

I'd NORMALLY be REAL HAPPY to oblige you on the cylinder pressure #'s,But MY current HO that actually RUNS & DRIVES has not been run for 3 years & is "buried" right now & it's going to be an ALL DAY deal to get it out & spark it up.

At this point in time,I figure I'm a good MONTH away from getting to it.

I will advise when I actually have the hood open & engine running.

I'm sure it's the same for many other 455 HO forum members.(their cars are "mothballed" for the winter)
