For what its worth I have yet to hear ANYONE claim that the headers, Dougs or otherwise, fit perfectly and required no tweaking at all. I had to tweak a couple of things on my 67' but the collectors were not one of those things I needed to tweak.

Here's a pic of the collectors :Peace"

Yeah, this is my first time installing headers, so what do I know? LOL!
Maybe I'm looking at it wrong, but it seems like they got the really tough stuff right- fitment between the suspension, 4-speed linkage, starter etc.
But what seems to be an "easy" thing- point the collector pipes and collectors straight back, verses tweaked out off of what the normal exhaust pipe location is- wrong.

I emailed Dougs directly an included a web link to this thread so they can see my pics. Lets see what they say. Bad jig in the weld shop on the day mine were made or what.

Now you have! My Doug's went in like butter, not a single tweak needed.

73ta and firebird 400 .....

For the record, You boys have firebirds and the question was asked for a 68 GTO/LeMans application..Different headers, full frame car, different fit altogether... So i will elaborate a bit on my statement and say that all GTO/LeMans owners that I know, regardless of the header brand have had to tweak something, however minor it may have been, in order to get them to fit properly.... How's that?

made some adapters to correct the alignment problem. Temporary fix for now. Still awaiting a reply from Dougs/Pertronix to what they think about my pics on this thread.

Clearly, Firebird's are better than GTO's.

I've always thought one of each would be a perfect combination to have.

Uh Huh, I do have one of each and its like having two girlfriends. Makes you feel like a bigshot until they both want something expensive at the same time.

I can't lie, I would love to own a 67 or 8 bird.... Used to have a 68 400 bird back in 78' . Never had a GTO and a Firebird at the same time though.... Hopefully one day, providing I can talk my wife into giving up her half of the garage!!!

How cool is this?
My buddy came over before the Syracuse Nationals last year with his numbers matching 67 FB400 4 spd car in Mariner Turquoise. My wife looked it over real well and then told me she wouldn't object if I bought he one!
Now just to find the spare cash to spend and a decent car to buy.
Nice to have a green light to purchase another Pontiac.
Woo-hoo!

Cool 70 gto

I have a 70 GTO and I'm having one heck of a time installing Dougs D567 headers. I had to remake the clutch swivel block to clear the #7 header tube. Had to remount the brake distribution block but now from what I'm reading the cross member is going to have a clearance problem. Any ideas how to remedy the cross member clearance problem without making a new cross member? For 650 bucks I think they should fit a little better than this. I have put headers on for 20 years and I know you have to tweak something to get them to fit but have to build a new clutch swivel block!! Hope I didn't whine to much.

Cockroach, that sucks, I was allright with everything except the position of the pipes going in to the collector.
As I'd mentioned before , in my situation the potentially hard stuff was OK, but the easy stuff was off a bit too much in my opinion.

I see the headers you've listed are for the round port headers, but other that that I can't see how your's should be off that much. My 4 speed stuff bolted right in, snug fit but it does fit.

I also have the round port headers for my 67 w/ Edelbrock heads and have had some issues. All is well now but I agree, for that kind of money they should have fit better. The Doug's headers for the D-port application seem to fit a little nicer than the round ports. The D-port headers have smaller tubes, maybe that's why. I can't help with the crossmember problem but I can offer a suggestion. Lob a call into tech support over at Petronix, Jegs or wherever you purchased them from. If anyone has the answers you seek, they should.... Good Luck!! Hope you get it fixed without too much of a headache.

Thanks Bro! She's a "keeper" for sure. Now to find a nice first gen 326 car, or a 6 cylinder Sprint would be way cool too.

Building a new garage this year for my car and the "next" one. LOL!!

My Doug's headers on my 69 gto have the same alignment issues with the crossmember.
I think that is LESS of an issue than the relationship to the starter, clutch, oil filter housing, lower a-arms, etc. I kinda think if the hard stuff fits okay, then it will HAVE to be a little off with the crossmember.

HARDEST part of my 69 gto was trying to put in the entire RARE exhaust that came with it. NOT a good plan to do in the driveway (I did this when I went to the 2 1/2" collector ram air repro manifolds - I have since gone to the Doug's and magnaflow).

RECOMMENDATION: Put on your headers and let your exhaust shop place and align the rest of the exhaust. When I went to 3" pipes, I went to a full Magnaflow sytem. I like it better than the RARE. I WILL put headers on, I WILL NOT try and place a full exhaust system, whether it's Pypes, RARE or whomever.

I JUST put Doug's on my 76 TA - they were maybe a touch easier than the 69 gto, but still a little of a PITA.
