Default Wash D.C. visit

Has anyone spent time in D.C. recently? Wife wants to sightsee for 4 or 5 days. We have not been there in 40 yrs.
Where to stay?, where to eat, are bus tours worth it? I heard that it is quite expensive now.

Have not been to the downtown for years, but I heard recently on the news that one of the Smithsonians building's is undergoing a major reno. It may have been the air and space, and I am pretty sure they said for the most part it will be closed. For that amount of time spent there a trip across the river to Mt. Vernon should be on your list. Just outside of town along the Potomac is a very large entertainment complex ( I think it is owned my MGM), I have driven by it quite a few times and it looks very nice, but yes, it does look expensive.

Go to air and space museum by Dulles airport. I always stay at embassy suites up from Ford theater. Close to sights and subway

We did the night tour by bus, and enjoyed it. Visiting Arlington and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was my highlight, a much more powerful experience than I expected.

I was surprised that most of the museums shut down around 5pm, when everyone heads back to the suburbs.

I did it with my kids two years ago- we found that instead of using the bus tours it came out to the same price or less to use Uber everywhere. From the hotel to attractions and all over. Then you are on your own schedule and it’s nicer than a bus

I like to stay near a subway station there - the line can get you most places. I’ll rent a car also to visit Georgetown, the Jefferson memorial, and I second the recommendation to go see Mt. Vernon.

I believe the Washington monument is open. Fords theater tour + take the walking tour after fords theater it takes you to where the conspirators were located before and during the assignation of Lincoln. I did this tour this past summer when my family was in town I really enjoyed this tour. Georgetown, National Geographic, FBI these are just a few of the places to see. Georgetown has a water front that hops at night on the weekends. There is the circular bus that you can take it’s a dollar to ride it. Go on line and check the circular will take you all over the city. During the summer it was free but I think I usually pay a dollar.

At one time there was a "spy museum" sorry for the lack of description but that's about all I know. My wifes boss went to it a few years ago and said it was pretty cool and worth the trip.

I was at Arlington last year and watched the changing of the guard, it was pretty intense. If you have children make sure they stay quiet because if they or you make any noise they WILL let you know it.

Top of the list is changing of the guard! Do it on a cold, drizzling rain day.

Somewhat a little different thing is going to the National Zoo and watch when they are feeding the big cats.
