Default Engine Removal

Anyone here successfully removed an engine from a first gen firebird without taking the hood off?

I'm working alone, not likely to find someone who is able to help me with removing and reinstalling the hood.

I'm not opposed to taking the intake and heads off if it's doable...I would prefer to keep the heads on though just to keep from making a bigger mess than necessary.

Just curious...thanks!

Default engine removal

I always removed the hood by myself, I put a thick blanket right behind it, also a piece of 2"x4" up front, kind heavy but no big deal. are you removing radiator?

I have a 67 Bird and a 69 Bird so I am familiar with these cars. It would be very difficult if not impossible to pull a comlete engine with the hood still on and the radiator support still in place. Best thing is to be patient and wait to find someone to give you a hand removing the hood.

Not worth tying to remove engine with the hood on and not worth trying to remove the hood by yourself. I have seen a lot of bad things happen others tried to take the hood off by themselves.

If I had $5 for every hood I've removed and installed myself without making even a scratch on the car, I'd at least have $100.

If you use your head, and think about it it's really pretty simple.

If anyone wants to know how to do it just ask, right now it's 1:30 and I'm heading to bed.

OK...seems unanimous. The vote is for the hood to come off.

Thanks for the input. I do actually have the radiator out. The thing has been sitting for a really long time. It was stored with just water in it. It's been pretty much stored for 20 years. I have started it a few times recently and then the heater core gave out...looks pretty grungy. I'm wanting to pull the motor and go through it. Depending upon how rough it looks will determine if a complete rebuild will be done.

Thanks for the advice all.

I've done it but it's very tight. You have to have it rigged very short and even then it just barely makes it. Better to take the hood off.
