Default Rear Axle

Thanks to all the replies that helped me with my rear axle question.
The rear was all rebuilt and is from a 1968 GTO 4 pinion Posi with 3:55 gear ratio,
I sandblasted the axle. Drained and refilled with new gear oil and additive.
Replaced the dented rear cover with new, new brake lines, Brakes and inspection marks and decals

That's nice work... I'm switching rears at this time myself. Wondering where you sourced your brake lines?

Default Getting uglier before it gets better

The metal work is being done by JMCR. The shop knows Pontiacs and they have a few gold and silver awards from POIC.
The first thing that was done was fitting the doors using new door hinges before cutting out the quarters and so there is a benchmark knowing the doors now fit perfectly.

Here is the rear sheet metal removed
I have full rear quarters, inner and outer wheel houses, full 1 piece trunk floor, 2 trunk extensions, and an NOS rear tail light panel.
Still a lot more tear down to go. Hopefully new sheet metal will be fitted next week

Nice to see some progress! Also, that last photo is is rather spooky with all the sheet metal gone. Not for the faint of heart.

Dead on plan. Gotta have the doors right before doing the back half. Please post more pictures as it goes. Considering how the car appears to be currently supported forward of the rear axle, I expect they will also jack up further back on the frame once the trunk pan is ready to weld to the inner wheel housings and the drop offs to the lower quarters. Doing so brings the rear body panel and trunk floor upward into alignment with the quarter panels.

Its been a few weeks and had some more unforeseen rust issues with the drivers side inner and outer rockers. I had to replace them before moving forward

Moving along now.
Decided to replace the package shelf by the real window since it was previously hacked up.
Replaced the filler deck between window and deck lid, full quarters, trunk extensions, full 1 piece trunk too
Everything is fitting pretty good and getting ready for final welding

Looks great. Where did you source the package tray from? I'll have to replace it in my '66, too. I know Ames makes them, but I'm always curious to know what people use.

I bought mine from Summit because I needed it in a pinch and was able to get it the next day
It's made by AMD and for a Chevelle.
They don't make the full panel for GTO
I was lucky and didn't need the panel but if you do then you have to piece it together because a Chevelle panel is shorter from package tray to trunk

Actually, if you look in the latest Ames catalogue, they do sell the full panel now. It's a new addition.

You will find that panel is a Chevelle panel
There is a note under the part starting it needs to be modified to fit
There is a thread on here where to cut and extend if you need the panel replaced
