It was a stand alone option for all 3 years, I believe but was part of the GT package all 3 years.

Misconception with some younger fans is that the T-37 and GT-37 are same package/trim/etc. But, the T-37 was new name for base Tempest model, not a performance pack as GT.

It was not a perormance pack but an apperarance pack on the T-37 2 dr ht in '71 and on the Tempest T-37 2 dr post or ht in '70. Only real 'performance' in the package was the Hurst shifter for the 3 speed and the 3 speed was a hd unit.

Any engine option on the GT-37 was also on the T-37 2 dr. They just tried to make it look like a GTO wannabe.

It was like the 'Heavy Chevy'.

I would think potential buyers would see the standard GT-37, dual exhaust with chrome tips, sport mirrors, hood pins, Hurst T, and stripes as both performance and appearance.

A post T-37 vs GT-37 just looks better and faster. IMHO

It may not be true but that was the marketing behind it.

Also, base engine on the GT-37 was the 2bbl 350, while base on the T-37 was the six banger.

The GT-37 was meant to be a sporty car for someone that couldn't afford a GTO or the insurance on a GTO.

You remember the Heavy Chevy too?
I knew of 2 around my neighborhood back in the 70's. Nobody else has ever heard of them.

True - but for me, my Dad was the Muscle Car Killer! He wouldn't let me have a GTO so I got the 71 LeMans with the 350 2V, bench, column shift, wheel covers...and had to share it with my sister! I guess it could have been worse - a T37 with a six banger would have been humiliating to a 16 year old "wannabe GTO driver". But, thanks to my Dad's foresight and far superior knowledge, I am here today, alive and well...Thanks Dad!

Hood pins were included in the GT-37 option for 1970-71, but not included in the LeMans GT option for '72. They were available separately all three years as a dealer-installed accessory. I believe that the only Pontiacs to ever come from the factory with hood pins were the 1970-71 GT-37s.

BJ, I bet the T-37 w/1 bbl straight six with three on the tree kept a few teenagers for opting for that car...

Not sure how a dad wouldn't view a standard GT-37 as performance compared to the standard T-37?

I forgot about the wheel/tire combo too.

When one ordered the GT package you had to a V8 engine first on the 2 dr T-37. Then and only then was the GT package available. The 350 did not come with the GT option but the GT option was based on first ordering the a V8. Any of them would do up to the the 400 base GTO engine in '70 and the 455 HO in '71. Had to order the endura nose to get the 455HO in '72.

You have to remember the GT option requred separately ordering the V8 first.

Not sure that doesn't apply to other option packages..or does it matter?

Salesman to buyer:

If you want get a GTO but, you have to order a 400 or bigger and accept the endura front end.

If you still want a V8 and great looks get the GT-37 option that can be orderd only with a 350 V8 or bigger, plus you get HD 3-speed or better, dechromed rally IIs with white letter tires, sport mirrors, dual exhausts with chrome splitterss, hood pins, and body stripes that look way cool on their own....Pontiac got it right. IMO

I agree. Pontiac got it right with the GT package. It lookes much better than the chebby version and it kinda looked like a Judge because of the stripes in '71 (early). I looked at the GT package when I ordered the T-37 in '71 and decided I did NOT want a car that would look cool. I just wanted one that went fast. Had to have carpets though and an AM radio(we did not have an FM station in Kodiak, AK). Those 2 and the optional vinyl covered seats were the only 'luxury' options. The other 6 options were all performance.

I have not seen a silver '71 GT 37 but wonder what it would look like. Anyone else seen one?

Just an fyi. For thosw who are wondering, if you will do a GT-37 search in this forum you will find a lot of very good and accurate information.

I've never seen a silver GT-37 either. Except for one photo. Does this count?

Must've been a cool car when new, with the blue stripe.

That is one SICK picture. Sure would like to have seen it new. Blue would be odd with a black interior. But again this maybe just me.
