Something happened this past week which reignited my search for correct paperwork for my car;

Question: Does anyone know if the 'consumer information' booklet was USA-specific, or if it was given to new car owners in both Canada and the United States?

So far from what I have found, it appears to me that Canadian and American sold cars received distinctly different paperwork;
In addition to the country specific vehicle owners manual, it appears as though American sold 1970 Pontiac's received:

1. Laminated(?) 'protect-o-plate' card
2. Pontiac new vehicle warranty and owner protection plan folder
3. consumer information folder (with a hole punched through the whole folder to designate which spots therein are applicable to the model)

While Canadian cars received:

1. Metal 'protect-o-plate' card attached to a folder (Canadian specific)
2. Pontiac-Acadian new vehicle warranty and owner protection plan booklet (Canadian specific)

I was lucky enough while scrapyard scouring, to find a complete packet of paperwork from a 1970 Canadian-sold Buick which included what I am now guessing to be a copy of the American warranty folder;



Does anyone here know if the second warranty folder (far right) was the American pressing, or if it was given out on both sides of the border?

I have seen only one 1970 Firebird listed anywhere with a consumer information brochure included with the owners manual ect (attached below);
It seems as though the consumer information booklet is more often lost with time, and to me, is a curious tidbit, because it is so seldom seen.



There is one ebay seller who is (unscrupulously?) selling what appears to be photocopies of the 1970 Firebird consumer information brochure (on what looks to be 8.5"x1" paper... but generally there is no mention of these brochures anywhere.



If I have figured this out correctly, the paperwork stayed essentially the same in 1971 for American cars, and through to 1972 for Canadian cars;
There after there was a:
- warranty folder
- protect-o-plate of some sort
- vehicle specific owners manual
- general information manual
- emmissions equipment manual
- consumer information booklet (USA-only?)

So, was the consumer information booklet USA specific?

And am I missing anything as far as literature which might be correct to my car is concerned?

Because I was prompted to look into this again this week, I dug up my collection of owners manuals, this picture pretty much sums up all my pre-1980's manuals with two exceptions (complete paperwork for a 1975 Astre, and a set of paperwork for a 1976 50th Anniversary Grand Prix w/Hurst Hatches).

WE had the credit card style slider at the Dealer I worked at, and used it with the metal cards for many years after the cars were out of warranty because this auto filled out the 3 part carbonless R/O .
Many Canadian cars were serviced with those metal Protect-o-Plates. Lots of Quebec owners traveled down to VT , and we served many Pontiac Parisienne cars. These babys had Poncho power too.
I Think I still have a Canadian Full line brochure from 1970. It shows a 1969 Firebird for the 1970 model.
I was able to use the little French I learned in high school anyway!
Many original Canadian Documents in the cars were serviced were in French.

Do you know how long Canadian cars used the metal tags?
(was 1970 the last year?)
Do you know what information was supposed to be on it, and the format it was supposed to be?

I know this deviates from my original query, but I find this all fascinating.

I know for a fact that I did warranty work on a '74 that had the metal protecto- plate on the warranty book flap.
IIRC the Info was all backwards , name and address and a customer number of some sort.

Not sure if this is the booklet you are referring to?
Seemed to be required starting in 1971.
Also no Canada listed but that may be just because it was a US regulation?
