Default Origins of WD-40

So it seems that WD-40 was developed in the late 1950s to use on the military and then the NASA Atlas boosters to prevent rust on there extrenal skins since they where not painted to save weight.
Who would have guessed?

Also, there's no silicone in it, so it doesn't contaminate the air with silicone in an area where you might want to paint.

Yup, essentially fish oil. If you are fishing with artificial lures in muddy water, try a little WD-40.

I used it for that on my Farmall (1942 year of manufacture).

That has been well known( I am a aviation nut of sorts). Its garbage for a penetrating oil. Plenty of others that are better.
I gill net salmon in a native fishery. I have seen old timers spray it on their net and fishing lures.

One of those million and one uses products. In aerosol form, a great and SAFE starting fluid. Much safer than ether based sprays and just as good.

I'm s supposed to be pretty inert stuff.
The sales folks that come in my shop see several cans of WD sitting all around...
I use other types of lubricants, many for specific reasons. First words out of their mouth, Our blabity bla super penetrant lube beats WD every. I tell them I know you that, but WD serves my purpose...

One of my he cool things about WD, is that it evaporates fairly quickly
I spray all bolts and nuts with it, it does the job, there

I used to buy all my others lube products from Zep. They went the way of most companies these days. You purchase it through a call center. They have mostly eliminated their salesmen that got away hem going to start with.
I bought Zep from my area sales rep for 20 years. He was 100 percent commission,on his own, no salary. He did well for himself and the company.

There's a couple of super-de-duper penetrants that I am allergic to. The smell just st sets me off..

No fish oil listed on the MSDS.

Lots of "Aliphatic hydrocarbon"; and "Petroleum base oil" which I take to mean "sixteen variations of kerosene".

Although I haven't tried it. ProMod relative tells me he wipes down his lower quarters to prevent tar adhesive from burnout box.

It's my first go to for a solvent. removes a lot of materials without damaging the surface. It even removes great stuff if used right away.

Ditto. Have used it from stuff in the garage to even heavy buildups in toilets. It wipes off with very little residue. Stickers, works pretty good at loosening old glue. Some spray light bulb thread to easy install/removal. People use it on grills, but I'm not that brave to get it anywhere near food.

Many kitchen appliances that 'appear' to be stainless are actually aluminum, works for cleaning and treating that. (no streaks)

Its got a million uses, sure. Has its place, versatile. Its fine on a squeaky door hinge. But on strait up rusty. corroded nuts, bolts studs, bearings ect there are real penetrating oils that are far better. PB Blaster, Cyclo. And even better ones than that though expensive.
I remove rusty, corroded parts for a living. And the truth of the matter is I cut, heat-shrink with a torch a lot of the time. Easy-Outs and all that suck. Give me a drill bit and a torch and I poke a hole in the broken bolt and cut out what is left with a torch, leaving the threads. If the bolt s larger enough don't even need the drill. The key is lots of water. Don't let the base metal get hot enough to get blown away. Cut, cool, cut cool.

I've got a couple of dusty cans of WD-40 in the garage, that I inhereted. I haven't bought a can in years. Decades, maybe. I don't get many wet distributor caps around here.

I wouldn't walk across the street to get a free can; but I'll bring it home if I'm already there (because I'm a hoarder, not because I'm going to use it.)

The stuff is sh!t for lube. Lousy penetrant. Anything that eats WD-40 is something that I won't eat. Their own corporation says as much, now there's "Specialty" products--you know, REAL lube, REAL penetrant, stuff that actually works--in a can with the WD-40 brand name on it, that isn't "WD-40" the original product.

JB-80 advertises that it's "Twice as good"; and they're lying. It's ten or twenty times as good.
