Comp Cam - Roller lifter failure
This is the 400 I built last year for a buddy of mine's 66 GTO. Based on the way it looks I was thinking the pin worked it's way out for the roller from the side that's still there. Butler is claiming it's probably due to weak valve springs. I went with the 22407 Manley springs when I built it, motor probably has somewhere between 2 and 3 thousand miles on it. I'm going to pull the spring assembly and test them, but doubting that's what caused this.... Thoughts?

Depends on how low the pressure is.

With the 22407 springs they are probably hydraulic. They are similar to the popular Crane 99893’s and might actually be the same spring in a different box. Curious to see if the lifters are the Shaver or Morel versions. I’m running the Shavers and have heard mostly good things, on the Morels not so much.
Either way sucks since a lot of us went roller to get away from the flat tappet issues but this is just as catastrophic, if not more so, and seems to happen randomly from time to time for no reason.

We've seen several Comp roller failures just like this. That's why we won't use them.

Same thing happened to me this summer with my brother's motor and it ruined the cam lobe. Seven months later still going through BS, I'll never use Comp HR lifters again.

I was going to use a Hyd roller in a recent build but was warned by my shop & Pontiac guru EngineMaster Len Caverly not to do so as hyd roller lifters were failing on the dyno one after another.
Did a flat Hyd and happy now I did.

Is the issue a true quality control issue at the level of the lifter manufacturer or a combination of the factory block lifter bore / lifter oil band position on the adapted Chevy lifters ? Or is it all of the above ?

My Spare Shortblock has a Big roller Cam, but no Lifters as yet. Been gathering PY notes on "the best solution";
Roller Spring for 0.440" Roller Lobes; eitherr Spring Pac 1243-16 or Trick Flow 16943-16, both $293/set @Summit. Roller Lifters; cheapest grenades are on ebay, everything else is a more expensive grenade. I wonder what a Jesel valvetrain uses for Roller Lifters...ECM has great results with the Jesel setup. What reduces to a Street/Strip Roller for 0.440" Lobes?!

I'm running BAM products bushed lifters in my junk but on 0.385" lobes with a 1.65 rocker. Isky Springs that are 250 closed, 590 open so nothing crazy. I just checked the lash the other day after about 1000 miles and probably 15 passes. Nothing changed and All was right with the world.
I got them from Kelvin Poe after he switched to hyd roller when he did drag week with them. They looked like they'd never seen a motor when I got them. Good lifters IMO, will probably get a spare set when I get mine ready for our Aussie version of drag week here next year.

I thought the consensus from the last 20 some page thread was the newer Comp Hyd rollers were good.

They're hydraulic and the second version of the comp cams rollers. Needless to say there's been a number of threads on this topic. I had the first version of comp''s hydraulic rollers in my 455 that failed, collapsed, after 15,000 miles. At the time a few years ago it appeared the best solution was to use the new version of comp's and those are in my 455 currently. I'm going to pop the top to my motor this winter now and have a look as I'm a bit stressed about this now!

It was... The problem with this kind of thing is something comes out and people start using them and all's good for a a year or two and then you start seeing whether they're really good or not because time/wear starts providing real world results. Look at the PRW roller rockers, Cliff was using them as well as I was using them. I'll be damned if the roller tips didn't start to wear funny. In this case Cliff saved me (he posted it on here) as his were too far gone and had flushed a bunch of **** through his motor where he needed to freshen it up.... That's what's f'd up about this hobby. You try to use parts from what should be quality manufacturers and nowadays with all the Chinese crap being made we end up being the quality testers... But I digress...

The Shaver hyd rollers are made in SoCal.They are EZ to tell as the body looks like a solid roller.All others have a body that comes past the pin.I have been told the best most consistent hyd roller lifters are Crane.I think they are up around $900.If you go on Speed Talk pretty much every engine brand has had some lifter failures both solid and hyd rollers.I have a new engine going on the pump this friday with a set of the Shaver lifters.I hope my good luck with them continues.Tom
