Default anyone know what this is.?

on my 76 trans am WITH A/C, on the firewall is a round plastic ball,about the size of a softball,with what looks like a vacum hose on it,is this vacuum for opening and closing the a/c and heater controls.? where is it supposed to plug into,the carb or the intake or somwhere else.? thanks.

It's a vacuum canister.
