Thumbs up

The color shown on the feature car in the article is correct. It was used on all Pontaic engines in 75-76. Some say early 77 too but I have never seen that.

Bill Hirsch has an excellent version of that color that is damn near perfect when compared with original parts.

I bought my 1976 engine paint through Fusick's Olds parts in areosol. It was around $20, but the quality was good. That is Olds big block blue.

I have the paint code if you want to go to a body shop and mix it up and spray base clear. The better urethane clears will last alot longer than a rattle can job. I just have to go find the can of paint I had mixed up.

My 77 W50 Formula had the same engine color has my 76 does. I hate that don't remember the build date that car. (And I hate that I parted it out)

Works very well. I have seen a couple three years later and looks as good as the day it was sprayed. The rattle can stuff is straight enamel. The base clear with a good urethane clear will outlast the enamel any day.

The Paint code is M4179A but he didn't mark what paint system he is using on the can. I think it is BASF but not sure. I will ask him Monday.

I had the original valve covers from my car that were removed when it was new for a chrome set. We matched the paint sample to that. I have a can of touch up left to brush on any areas I damage putting it together.

How did they switch colors? Based on build date or the car it was going in. Ive got a 75 that's got a date code of Oct 74 but it originally came in a 75 A-Body. Should it be dark blue or metallic?

Model year 1975, and 1976 engines(and a VERY few early 1977 engines) used the metallic blue...
