Default Boss Bird Engine Detail Pics

As many of you know, the Boss Bird has been offered for sale for a good while now. With Covid 19 closing many tracks and a general disruption in our daily lives and racing, buying a race car and putting it on the track hasn't been the #1 priority for most. The plan is still to sell the race operation in tact and with that in mind, I have assembled engine #2, the one that ran 250+ MPH last year at Norwalk. I wanted to have some pics to remember the engine by in the event it is sold and possibly changed around a bunch. So here are some detailed pics of what a 3000+ HP traditional Pontiac looks like on the inside. Surprisingly simple really. Rugged parts able to withstand extreme PRM, pressures and load. I will post 5 pics of the bottom and 5 of the heads to start. If there is enough interest, I can post some more. Enjoy traditional Pontiac engine design, a true representation of the Ram Air V tunnel port head.

Traditional Pontiac Ram Air V Pontiac head on steroids. Design by Eric Larson. Stock valve and port locations, stock bore centers.

Here are a few more I have managed to transfer. The card reader in my laptop doesn't work so it's a bit of an ordeal to get them on the computer and in a small enough format.

Very nice, M.G.

What size head studs and what head gasket used?

The head studs were 9/16" in stock locations. The head gaskets were Flattout coated copper .080 to .090 depending on pistons. Single .041" stainless wire in the head. .015" protrusion. Receiver groove in block. One pair of head gaskets used for 10 years. Never a failure. As Eric Larson pointed out multiple times. The number of fasteners is a minor factor in keeping a head sealed. It's all about uniform clamp load and enough clamp load. A solid, thick deck gets the job done. The heads were never resurfaced either in the 10 years we ran the car.

Thanks for this thread Mike!
Any idea where the Boss Bird might be going?

I just googled the Boss Bird and watched the record breaking run at Norwalk.
I had goosebumps.

I don't follow the USA dragracing, but as one eyed Pontiac enthusiast I have enjoyed the success and history of this car and crew over the years.

May it continue , so bush mechanics like myself (Google bush mechanics Australia) without a complete understanding of the science can chant,

"Pontiac's forever , forever Pontiac ",

Australia has a pretty serious love of nostalgia funny cars. Google “ Aeroflow funny cars”

Maybe you should buy the Boss Bird and join them? Remember.......we knew nothing about running a nitro car when we started into this project but we surrounded ourselves with the right people. Our tuner, Jerry Newman, has made numerous trips to Australia and tunes the “Down Under Thunder” car.

We’d love an excuse to fly to Australia and train a crew for you.

Eric
