Default Two different Red interiors in 66??

Were there 2 different shades of red interiors in 66? Metallic and solid?? I requested a sample from Legendary of the 65/66 Metallic Red upholstery, they sent me a 1"x1" swatch and the color is much different than I remember seeing in the past.. Much darker, almost maroon, and even looks bronze at certain angles, not the bright red i was expecting.. I see some PUI dealers list 2 different Reds for a 66, one Metallic one nonmetallic.. was there a mid year change, or different OE suppliers for different plants? Hopefully someone can help shed some light on this for me, thanks in advance.

According to the factory sales manual there was only one color red vinyl material available and it was red metallic.

Default 1966 Tempest Series Red interior

Only “one” color Red offered in ‘66.

I agree with Rob “SR-71”.

My Sales book also shows just one Red interior offered, along with a Factory Original ‘66 interior.

Thank you for the input everyone. Does anyone have pictures of Legendary and PUI red interiors installed? I'm trying to decide if I want to change the color on my car. An original Burgundy/Black interior car, like the idea of Burgundy on Red, but after spraying out the interior color and looking at the sample from Legendary, I'm not sure.. Thanks again

FWIW, Pontiac's recommended exterior colors with a red interior were:
A - Starlight Black
C - Cameo Ivory
N - Burgundy
P - Silverglaze
R - Regimental Red

Just to be clear here, because many might miss it at a quick glance: picture of the interior with the door open is not a 1966 photo for a sales book.....it's 60sstuff's very own '66 GTO, and the interior is as it is today, in 2020....original and unrestored. Wrap your head around THAT, gents!!
For a guy who's always driven/owned GTO's that had a lot of use, the condition of the interiors of both of 60sstuff's GTO's is amazing. You'd think you're looking at a year old interior.....not a 54-55 year old one!

Hey Johnny,

I don’t have a sample of a ‘66, but here is a ‘65 that’s Burgundy on Red to view.

Legendary sends the material that does not have the grain that the 66 has since it is pressed into it when they do the heat pressed seams. The color will be fine if you match it with you interior.

I had to go with PUI because only they made the covers for my bench. But the colour left something to be desired. Too coppery if you will. The Legendary sample looked good to me and I wished they made a cover for my seats. I would have paid more for them.
The sample of the metallic red material from SMS was the best. But who the heck are they? I've heard that you could go to your grave before you get your order. The pic that SR-71 posted of Legendary covers looks great. Obviously a quality installation as well.

Here's what they (Legendary) sent me, and the spray out of the Metallic interior color and exterior Burgundy.

I think you need to read this and factor it into your decision. Still burns..... http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...ighlight=cardo From what i understand, nothing has changed there. I have an acquaintance that works there.

Cardo,

Thanks for posting the HUGE difference in the quality of those two seat cover manufacturers.

That PUI covering is embarrassing. Every time I see these Flat Pleats in the covers I shake my head.

Save some money elsewhere on a car restore and spend it on a quality interior.

Thank you Cardo for that link, very good info. Whether I decide to go Red or Black looks and sounds like Legendary is definitely the way to go.
