Harmonic Damper interchange
Do the older, early-'60s two-piece dampers interchange with the later style dampers?
They used the two-piece on the '67 400 - same as the '66 389. So, logically it should work in both directions? Thanks! |

Ten days late for an answer, but here goes. Think the "later style dampers" might have been the reason for no answers. All the early style dampers from 1959 to 1967 were the same and interchangeable, and everything will align and work properly.
If you try to slip on the later 1968 to 1979 damper on a 1967 or earlier stock engine, it will hit the cast-in timing tab, and pulley alignment will be off. If you slip on an early damper on a 1968 or later timing cover, the timing tab will be a distance away from the damper, the timing marks won't align properly, and the pulley alignment will be off. So best to change over timing cover, damper, and pulleys if wanting to do a change.
