Steering making grinding noise

I'm hearing and feeling a grinding in my 67 tilt wheel. Sounds like at the top. Also makes noise when driving over bumps or turning into parking lots. Not sure what column came out of. Don't believe it is original. Was fine before I lower it to replace dash bezel. Have driven it 500 miles before grinding started. Any thoughts before I start taking apart.
